Director of Pixar’s Coco and Toy Story 3. Caretaker of the Overlook Hotel. Tiki God.
“The world’s foremost Shining aficionado” — The Hollywood Reporter
This is a very hot-button topic for me. There is an unfortunate lack of respect for animation as a universal storytelling medium—on par with live-action—and that barely improved in the 25 years I worked at Pixar. The problem is systemic in the U.S. and in the film industry.
My father, Bob Unkrich, died tonight at 93. He was an artist and a World War II Army hero. He stormed the beach at Normandy. I’m so thankful I was able to spend time with him last week and show him Coco. He loved it.
He’ll be on our ofrenda next year. I’ll always remember him.

I honestly don’t mean for this to be contentious. I’ve literally spent 25 years having countless people tell me that they’ve never seen any of my films because they don’t have kids, or that they don’t like “kid’s movies.” I’m not trying to win an argument here.
I believe that
#FamiliesBelongTogether
. I stand with immigrants, asylum seekers, and refugees, and will do all I can to
#resist
the family separation policy.
I wanted Miguel’s homemade guitar to look like it was really made by a kid, so I had my son, Max, copy De la Cruz’s guitar. Max also did all of the drawings and handwriting displayed on Miguel’s ofrenda to De la Cruz.

Just learned that
#PixarCoco
has passed The Avengers to become the
#1
film OF ALL TIME in Mexico! 🇲🇽 Gracias to everyone who has shown the film such love! ❤️
There are precious few times we’ll ever get to see a movie wholly unlike anything that’s ever been seen before. I bow down to Bob Persichetti,
@pramsey342
,
@rodneyrothman
,
@philiplord
and everyone else who created
#SpiderVerse
. Bravo!
Sorry, no. We make films for everyone and make sure there’s nothing inappropriate in them for kids, since we know kids will be part of our audience.
And, “hi.” 😊
The Mexican Federal Police have, for the first time, added a Xoloitzcuintle dog to their Canine Unit. They allowed the public to vote on his name. And the winner? Dante!

Just heard that Ned Beatty passed away in his sleep.
It was a joy and and an incredible honor to work with him.
Thanks, Ned, for bringing Lotso to life — both his good side and his not-so-good side. We’ll miss you.
This was the most complicated shot in Coco. It was the result of a TON of work by some very talented people across many disciplines. I think we had a wrap party just for this one shot!

We originally had a scene in the epilogue of
#PixarCoco
where de la Cruz wandered his empty mansion, bereft, robbed of the one thing he prized: adoration.
But we finally decided, screw him. He doesn’t deserve the screen time.
So sad to hear that Bud Luckey passed away today. He voiced Chuckles in Toy Story 3, but that was the least of his many amazing accomplishments. A tweet is not sufficient to sing his praises.
#PixarCoco
has had a successful opening in Japan! It has passed Finding Dory and The Lion King internationally, becoming the
#4
non-sequel animated release of all time, behind only Frozen, Zootopia and Finding Nemo! Congratulations to everyone involved!
Tomorrow, after six years of hard work on the part of my talented crew,
#PixarCoco
finally opens in the U.S. If you see it, please let me know what you think! 🇲🇽🎺🎉
Today is the 5th anniversary of the U.S. release of Coco. I remain immensely proud of the film, and all the beautiful people who contributed to bringing it into the world. I know it has touched many lives and hope that will continue for future generations. ¡Viva México!🇲🇽💀
This morning I held in my hands for the very first time the fruits of 10 years of labor: my new three-volume book on the making of Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, coming soon from TASCHEN.
Just watched Everything Everywhere All at Once for the third time. I’m becoming more and more convinced it’s one of the greatest pieces of cinema ever conceived. We’re lucky to have it in our universe.
