UPDATE: Last week, cargo workers at Newark airport won $2.2 million in back wages. NJ labor department found that Swissport, the global airport subcontractor, had cheated more than 800 workers of pay.

NEW: Since 2001, airline work has been outsourced to temp workers. Swissport, the biggest global subcontractor of airport handling, is emblematic of that shift. I wrote about workers at Swissport, who describe a workplace rife with injuries and accidents.

I see this as part of a shift in governance strategy that makes the university more like a financial portfolio, rather than an institution that shields researchers from the whims of the market. @ChicagoMaroon published a series on those trends in 2020:
