9/ As AI tools continue to enter healthcare, we need to sharpen our critical lens. We must become aware of the history of racism entrenched in the data that is input into these ‘black box’ algorithms which generates the answers we heavily rely on for life/death decisions.

8/ As LLana James states: “Race-medicine is not solely about Black people. It is also about how white people have used themselves as a primary reference in clinical assessment, and have in so doing, not necessarily tended to the precision of the science.”.

7/ “Race-medicine” touches almost every body system. In August, NEJM published a list of specialties that use race correction in clinical algorithms: cardiology, nephrology, obstetrics, urology, endocrinology, pulmonology and oncology.

6/ “Race correction” continues in the medical profession. In the US, spirometers still calculate a Black individual’s lung volume by applying a correction factor of 10-15%, although many pulmonologists aren’t aware of this because it’s incorporated into the technology.
