Hi! I'm presenting a poster at #CogSci2024 on Sat. PM! 🎉.We try to distinguish Deep vs Shallow conformist social influence:.1️⃣ What's D and S conformity? Which do people exhibit?.2️⃣ How does D or S conformity result in different macro patterns?. Hope to see you at P3-LL-822! 🤝

In my first PhD paper, now in @NatureComms, we explore how & when an outside individual option can circumvent the free-riding problem via optimism and facilitate collaboration. Paper:

We argue that these seemingly disparate results can be reconciled by looking at the different degrees of *loners' externality* on group outcome. When groups form flexibly enough, the negative externality of loners is limited, and individual options robustly support collaboration!

Interestingly, recent studies suggested individual options *hinder* collaboration (e.g., Gross & De Dreu, 2019, Sci. Adv.). Like billionaires not favoring social insurance, the ability of self-reliance can crowd out collaborative motivation, making group coordination even harder.

Through modeling and experiments, we found that the individual option *fosters optimism* among group members. Optimists (who believe others would cooperate in groups) tend to self-select into groups, and some pessimists become optimistic anticipating this self-selection.

In reality, individuals often have an individualistic alternative outside groups, leading to *voluntary participation* in groups. How does this differ from fixed groups? We modeled the situation as a threshold public goods game with an outside individual option.

Collaboration poses a social dilemma, creating shared and non-excludable benefits from individual efforts. Researchers have long asked how to overcome free-riding temptations, often focusing on *fixed groups*.
