Unfortunately, not just in Detroit, as @Cande313 points out, but across the country. We need to be mindful of this and address it to effect the real change that is desperately needed.
And as @Cande313 points out in Detroit some communities have been purposely underserved - it’s an indictment of the journalistic mission and it’s real and needs to be addressed within large newsrooms

One of the hardest parts of being a news entrepreneur is how lonely the journey can be. You're making tons of decisions every day, hoping you’re making the right bets. (Thread!)

We deleted a tweet linking to an Associated Press story and photo about crimes during spring break in Florida. The story inappropriately used an image of Black women that was not relevant to the article. We apologize for the oversight.

.@AP: Story about 75 guns and 161 arrests but the attached photo shows 5 Black women scantily clothed who aren't part of the story, implying they're involved. Nothing in the story shows that. It's wrong and perpetuates stereotypes. Media must do better. https://t.co/GoG33J7LK5

Climate change and even farming happen at the urban level too, and it's not only a rural land issue. Regardless of where you are reporting, climate change is part of your beat.

It's gatekeeping at its finest. I didn't have impressive clips before I started at @enquirer but I was fortunate that @tcallinan saw something in me and took a chance. Find the people who will invest in you - AND THEN PAY IT FORWARD by mentoring the next generation.
The vicious cycle of "you need clips to get a journalism job" and "you need a journalism job to get clips" is massively amplified at the student/intern level. J-school programs, internships, fellowships are all stacked *against* journalists from diverse backgrounds.
