At what point in the discourse do we talk about how much of ‘community’ has just been women & girls being expected to do things.
Babysitting for a friend is out. Older siblings making a bottle is out. Baby sitting for a family member during an emergency is also out. Tough crowd fr.

Everyone lamenting the death of community and no one acknowledging why women & girls en masse are tapping out. Lmk when y’all get to that part.

Because community is very much alive and well amongst people who don’t abuse the privilege, so maybe…

@Lerato_Sarisa @thespicexqueen Yea, it's kind of sad if community only stands if women work for it, not if we all do. I have never heard of bros babysitting their homeboys kids for them, a lot of people don't expect male babysitters for their kids and the eldest child in this scenario is usually the daughter..

@hapikohw 100%! It’s such a dishonest convo, to pretend like community is crumbling because people are no longer kind, thoughtful or valuing the collective. Girls have been burdened almost exclusively, unnecessarily & thanklessly. They are tired. 🤷🏾‍♀️

@kharisizm Women and girls doing things is not all, or even the majority, of “community”

@kharisizm I want to add a thinking poing to the debate: as community is mostly women and girls, what happens to the women and girls who rely on community the most when it breaks down?

@kharisizm Community should be all people expected to do things! Men, start stepping up, if you wanna support women, like really really

@kharisizm Bingo! They expect other women to help before they expect the child's own father to pull his finger out.

@kharisizm No bc ppl always say traditions are dying out like cookouts, family reunions, etc but the women are just tired of having to carry that burden 🤷🏾‍♀️ if the men stepped up n actually tried to plan shit instead of leaving the women in the family to plan it all they wouldn’t be dying 🤷🏾‍♀️

@kharisizm We know. We should caution against thinking and doing things like men though. Instead we have to invest and build something different that still is community based but not rooted in mistreatment, neglect, or exploitation. Lack of community still hurts girls the most.

@kharisizm @thutozadc1 It's been talked about- extensively, by feminists and scholars and researchers of women's labour. It's just that no-one really listens to them. There was a moment in the pandemic when suddenly everyone was oh my god-this is what women do all day caregiving? We do NOT want that!

@kharisizm @haylesatan Using the word community implies supporting each other, not exploiting each other. My friends & I will watch each others kids in a pinch, will help w/errands when needed, will help each other any way we can because we do it FOR each other out of ❤️ & don't take advantage.
