I say this all the time. No one ever has the same energy for psychosis and personality disorders. Most of the push to end MH stigma is centred on supporters wanting to be seen as benevolent.

When someone is depressed/anxious, it feels and looks good to say you'll be there, to tell them there's no shame etc. But when someone is hallucinating in the office or behaving erratically on the train, you're filming and laughing. K.

@kharismg Well a lot of people don’t know much about anything outside of Depression and Anxiety

@StillDiggs Which is understandable - those two are the most palatable to generate support/awareness/funding for. But even if they don't know what's wrong or how to help, seeing someone is mentally ill should = compassion of some sort, every time.

@kharismg Totally agree. People want to ride the wave and be progressive and, honestly, popular. The tone behind depression and anxiety is actually that they are totally normal and NOT these more serious and less understood mental issues. The MH wave is fraudulent as it further stigmatizes

@Astro_DT Exactly - you see it in how depression/anxiety is romanticised, memes about pulling yourself together post-breakdown etc. Accessing treatment should be normalised, but never the issues themselves. For something so progressive the "movement" is doing plenty damage.

@kharismg @scabbyscribe56 and let’s not forget the absolutely deplorable treatment of people with substance abuse disorders, the most common of all mental health issue

@ColtonColtoff @scabbyscribe56 Anytime MH sufferers veer outside the boundaries of what’s “easy” to understand, people return to the kind of thinking/treatment that created stigma in the first place. We have to do better.

@kharismg @Speede_e You are so right. As a former therapist, it infuriates me. People don’t choose to have a mental illness involving psychosis or a personality disorder. Everyone needs compassion, effective treatment, and encouragement, not just folks with the most common/palatable problems.

@johnsonemilyp @Speede_e Exactly - all warrant the same amount of respect and consideration. People need to be honest about their biases, because too many people are being failed by inconsistency.

@AlexDotWalsh "Awareness" campaigns start and stop after those two conditions, even tho there's often ample resources/help waiting for all. Seriously, well done for getting that clarity - it's the foundation for effective treatment and building well being đź’›

@kharismg @IWriteAllDay_ I’ve had people say they wouldn’t date me because of my personality disorder. I’ve had people look at me like I’m this unstable ticking time bomb that can’t be touched. it’s shitty. A lot of this comes from from folks who have anxiety/depression, too.

@kharismg @emoblackthot This is so true and honestly, in school, I’m majoring in psychology because I want to work with/try and help those people who struggle with the other disorders people don’t want to talk about. The schizophrenics, multiple personalities. I love studying all the factors that play

@PandeanPanic THIS. The assumptions people make about BPD have made sympathy for it a myth. It hurts generally but when that dismissal comes from so called MH advocates...ugh. Don’t let ignorant people keep you from living as fully as you deserve to 💛
