I don't know if I'll ever get used to folks "liking" my message to mean yes.

I honestly just need 48 uninterrupted hours to work. Is that too much to ask?

Trying @SubstackInc as a new medium -- if you have an account, please consider following! (and I'm happy to follow back) Why Schools in America Treat Bilingualism Like a Liability, Not an Asset

Each video focuses on 1 issue & is only 60 seconds (which was an incredibly hard feat!) but hopefully it offers just enough background to springboard into a generative discussion that centers the brilliance of bilingual children and engages teachers in a process of unlearning.

To that end, as we are now squarely in the fall semester, I have compiled the 29 videos I've created thus far in case they might support your synchronous or asynchronous teaching.

Fellow language teacher educators, I created @TheBilingualProfessor with two primary goals in mind. First, to get asset-based bilingual perspectives into mainstream media, and second, to support teachers of multilingual learners. https://t.co/H6fZTHuKRK

My hot take on why schools in the United States treat bilingualism like a liability and not an asset in the very first few days of kindergarten. https://t.co/7oOqj3R5rO

When I filled out my daughter’s kindergarten intake form, I thought I was honoring her bilingualism. Instead, I triggered a test that told me how little our schools value languages beyond English.

Today, I built out and published my three fall courses on our learning management system and sent welcome emails to students. I also did two loads of laundry, one load of dishes, and, of course, emails. Yet, I still feel like I didn't do enough today. Productivity to what end?
A busy life is not a symbol of status. It's a symptom of trying to do too much for too many people. A full calendar brings a surplus of stress and a shortage of energy. Reflecting and relaxing should be top priorities. Unscheduled time isn't wasted. It's invested in well-being.

I have become so suspicious of the m-dash--a punctuation friend I used to use so frequently but now have had to change for fear of perceived AI detection.

More and more research uses GAI as an acronym for Generative AI, and my Cantonese brain can't stop thinking of 雞 (gai, chicken) every time I come across it in a manuscript. 🤦🏽♂️#bilingualbrain

Grateful I don't get motion sick in cars. Another weekend with long-distance driving means I can work on these Spencer Foundation grant reviews as my wife (who is prone to motion sickness) drives. #makingitwork #lifewithyoungkids

Have you ever felt at home in a language, yet still longed for something just out of reach? For those of us who carry more than one language, belonging is never simple. "Living in the Tension Between Longing and Belonging"
kevin-m-wong.com
The word longing is embedded in the word belonging . At first, they seem like opposites. One suggests you have arrived; the other, that you are still searching. But for many multilinguals, the two...

If you’ve ever felt mentally exhausted after a day of switching between languages, you’re not alone. Multilingualism is powerful but it also asks a lot from our minds, bodies, and emotions. https://t.co/LppPBvfXCH
