Defending democracy and the public’s right to elect politicians of their choice against authoritarianism is becoming tougher by the day in 🇹🇷. Failure is likely to have foul consequences not just in Turkey but everywhere where democracy & rule of law is under assault.
Life of an opposition politician in Turkey: . Left: Istanbul’s elected mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, presidential hopeful, jailed.Middle: CHP leader Özgür Özel, may be removed from post by a court soon.Right: CHP Istanbul head Özgür Çelik, removed from post by court ruling today

Ultimate test is whether there will be ‘real’ elections in 🇹🇷 by latest 2028. If it happens then we can say these demos paid off, any earlier than a greater impact can be claimed. For now like elsewhere those in power prefer to ignore the political significance of these demos….
I’m not sure the Turkish demos have not ‘changed the course of Turkish politics.’ True, the power structure hasn’t cracked (and has cracked down harder in response). But, for the first time, a more or less united opposition front has been formed, galvanized by popular support.

50+ of these impressive demos have taken place. However, they are not changing the course of Turkish politics. Why? Similar protest demos are taking place in Israel, Serbia etc… There too we don’t see those in power changing course. Why? Would it be any different in the US?.
One of a long running series of weekly demonstrations against Erdoğan’s jailing of dozens of political opponents. They happen all across the country and have lit a fire. Our backs are against the same wall. What will Americans do ?.

Great piece on how is that a world that for 80 years has wondered how was it possible to let the Holocaust to happen today is shamelessly watching the destruction of Gaza and the untold sufferance of Gazans with inaction.

This is a dam meant to supply the Turkish city of Bursa known as ‘Green Bursa’ for the abundance of greenery that surrounds the region including the forests of Mount Uludağ (Olympus). Surely, this painful scene can’t be function of just global warming, how about poor governance.

Two photos of a frightening reality depicting the drying up of a beautiful and bountiful lake in southern Turkey. Why is it happening? Beyond global warming could it also be poor governance!.
#SuKrizi

Excellent analysis with spot on recommendations. The gist of the argument: Turkey could make a visible and impactful contribution to European security but it would 1st need to get its own house in order, meaning revive its democracy and return to the rule of law.
📌 Very comprehensive piece by the @CATS_Network on the #Turkey's role in the future European security architecture.

What can one say but ‘YUH!’ to the mentality that insist charging tolls to fire fighting engines to cross a bridge on their way to tackle forest fires? Adding insult to injury is that tax payers subsidize the operation of this bridge by billions of USDs.

May voices demanding accountability for the incompetence and poor governance that is fueling this destruction get louder and help save what green cover is left?.
Wildfires are tearing through Turkey. 70+ blazes. 13 dead. Multiple thousands evacuated. Turkey’s wildfires were supercharged by heatwaves, wind. The government is asleep at the wheel in response. WHEN INCOMPETENCE MEETS NATURE, THE PEOPLE PAY.

Utterly painful images! Were we not told ‘Never Again’ after similar images emerged from WWII concentration camps in Europe? Why are such images still with us 80 years after the Holocaust? Why don’t we hear LOUDER and more EFFECTIVE ‘stop it’ cries? Why?.
