As paradise burns in Turkey it reveals a governance system that is utterly dysfunctional & in desperate need of replacement with one that is accountable, democratic & transparent, only then what little might be left of the paradise can be saved and reconstructed
Today I am HUGELY PROUD to have had the opportunity to join old friends & colleagues in this relentless vigil in defense of academic freedom, meritocracy, democratic spirit & a unique institution that has nurtured and disseminated these values across generations
This is my flight to a new 🇹🇷 where the last time CHP won was 1977, a year after I had graduated from college. I hope these results bring back the primacy of meritocracy over hypocrisy & help save my alma mater, Bogazici University

Today is the 98th year of the Turkish Republic founded by Atatürk, very few world leaders continue to be revered by such large numbers. May his legacy help the country to achieve the pluralist democracy, the rule of law and the prosperity that its people deserve before long

The struggle for

academic independence persists against all odds. This struggle is no less important than the elections next year. Both outcomes will determine if 🇹🇷 can rejoin the community of countries where rule of law & democratic values reign or not
I too am proud of my alma mater, honored to have served it. It survived 93 Harbi, Balkan wars, WWI, transition from Empire to a republic, & more to uphold academic excellence. I pray for it to survive this challenge too & remain a beacon for a bright future

Crème de la crème, absolutely very best students, with top notch results from a grueling university placement exam, are protesting the appointment of a rector with total disregard to meritocracy to run TR's top notch university, hope their wisdom is heard
Today is indeed a very special day as 🇹🇷 celebrates its centenary. Let’s hope that in the coming years the country can nurture the legacy/ideals of its founders & aspire to become a country that is truly democratic, rule bound, secular, meritocratic & @ ease with its diversity
Today Turks celebrate the 100th year of their nation state founded by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. A lot of introspection. But overall a palpable sense of pride for being a modern, stable country in the midst of a difficult geography. With immense and unending gratitude to Ataturk.
People of Turkey deserve more recognition of their generosity in ever harder times especially considering that TR hosts almost 4 million refugees compared to less than 3 million in the rest of Europe calculated from UNHCR Global Trends report for 2019

Sad, very sad scenes reminiscent of the 1970s when in a partially state planned economy, scarcities and hence lines for goods were not unusual but WHY now? Turkish public deserves better than returning to economic ills of a half century ago.
This is BIG news. The EU once more has shown that at most difficult times it is able to "stop the clock" and find a solution to deepen integration & hence solidarity. It is sad that it happens when TR is running away from the EU
I am now doubly proud for the innovative, persistent & principled resistance that students, faculty & friends from my alma mater have shown, it sure will enter the annals/textbooks of civil/democratic protest but a voice tells me that dark days are not yet over...
We may never know the precise constellation of calculations that produced last night's sacking of gov-appointed rector Melih Bulu. What's clear is non-stop protests from students, faculty, alumni, and supporters at Boğaziçi and beyond raised the costs of his tenure for the AKP.

Fascinating! Akhisar once had an important Greek presence until the population exchanges of early 20s. Onassis is supposed to have been born there. Yet, I had not heard of a Jewish community. The school is even more fascinating, definitely deserves a visit.
A dream came true today: for years I read and wrote about a Jewish farming school in Turkey which was founded in late 1880s in Akhisar. It’s name was Or Yehuda and was sister school of Mikveh Israel in Ottoman Palestine. The abandoned building still has its Hebrew/Ottoman plaque.

Another puzzlement I have is how come TR saw its highest ever per capita income @ almost $13K in 2012 when its degree of integration with the West was deepest & then as it drifted away it steadily came down to below $8K in 2020, a Western conspiracy but then which one?
