gizmo is a very fun app AND top tech talent @trudypainter works there AND there are multiple gizmos that involve extremely unflattering close-ups of my face. and now you too can become an early adopter:.
Meet Gizmo: a new way to make playful, personal software—right from your phone. No code. No desktop. Just your camera, your fingers, and a good idea. [1/7]

Not sure I’ve ever knowingly pre-ordered a book before. But when Mike Bird releases a visionary tome about the history of land… what else could I possibly do?.
BIG NEWS: My book, The Land Trap, is coming out on Nov 4! I've been fascinated by this topic for years. The book tells the story of why land still occupies such a huge role in finance, economics and politics globally, and why that's a source of huge risk. You can preorder NOW!

I can’t claim I’ve really put Opus 4.1 through its paces, since I hardly know anything about coding. But this model *did* successfully dissuade me from buying a stovetop kettle. So I strongly recommend it.
Today we're releasing Claude Opus 4.1, an upgrade to Claude Opus 4 on agentic tasks, real-world coding, and reasoning.

a good thing about making highly amateur photography a hobby is that it forces you to go on more walks

Here are some pics from my trip to the Bay Area instead. I’m here until the end of this week, and then I’m moving back to the UK for the foreseeable future. (Which means I’m after new friends… again!)

I was going to announce that I’ve joined Anthropic by posting what I bought from the Claude vending machine, but there have been substantial production delays (which Claude assures me are all under control). Still: I’ve joined Anthropic’s editorial team. I’m very VERY excited.

And I think that combination of ambition and rigor makes GiveWell really, really special. So I’m exceptionally sad to leave — partly due to that, and partly just because it’s an incredibly fun and fulfilling place to work. I’d recommend it to anyone.

Hopefully I’ll have something published later this year about why I think chlorination specifically is so exciting. But across all of GiveWell’s grantmaking areas (like nutrition or vaccines), there are other, equally exciting plans afoot too.

These grants are often exceptionally cool. E.g., our team has been making a big effort to scale up automatic water chlorination in the countries with the worst health burdens — by providing start-up funding and support for orgs to trial out new programs.

GiveWell is launching a request for information to identify organizations interested in implementing water chlorination programs in our highest-priority countries.
