Today, I swore in as Member of Parliament. I pledge to amplify the voices of all those who are overlooked and oppressed by Orban’s regime. As a liberal woman, this space feels like another planet — but the more they try to silence us, the louder we will become.

6/. Perhaps most importantly: a landmark reform of the mandate was the passing of the rule of law mechanism, or linking EU money to EU values. It is up to the next Parliament to protect this achievement.
For 10 years, it’s been groundhog day in Hungary. EU funds end up with a spouse of a Fidesz politician, but the case is never investigated. The EU is “deeply concerned”, but “powerless”. Come January, this excuse is gone. Parliament will make sure of it.

5/. In the midst of the COVID crisis, I advocated for the importance of transparency.
I strongly support a common European approach in #vaccines procurement. But we have been demanding more transparency around contracts & data for *half a year* — @vonderleyen’s strategy to avoid scrutiny from Parliament & media has been a recipe for disaster.

Russian soilders use rape as a weapon of war. I know some politicians insist that we look away. But this is the reality emerging from Ukraine. And these are war crimes. The European Parliament calls for a special international tribunal to fight impunity. Justice must be served.

Today’s Plenary debate on Orbán’s homophobic law was an emotional one. I paid tribute to my friend, civil rights activist Milán Rózsa, who we lost to suicide at the age of 26. One of his last protests was against Putin’s anti-gay law— we now have the replica of that law in the EU

As we said from the very beginning— it was a huge mistake to give the enlargement portfolio to Orban’s appointee, handing the keys to Ukraine’s accession process or EU Western Balkans policy to Putin’s top ally. Great to see it’s starting to sink in in BXL.

The crisis in Georgia clearly shows that the EU’s credibility to spur democratic reforms in our neighbourhood is in shambles. Georgian leaders can just ask— why can’t we have a Putin-inspired law to crush civil society if EU-based autocrats do the same?
