These decisions clearly reflect that we don't know how bad some of these infectious diseases can be. And that is the purpose of public health! But the other purpose of it is that...we never find out. I don't think we will accomplish the latter this way.

The U.S. no longer broadly recommends vaccines for flu, hepatitis A, rotavirus and meningococcal disease. Health officials say the guidance aligns with that of peer countries.

This is my favorite news of the summer!!!!!
Exciting (and breaking!) news: The Friends of the National Arboretum announced that the Arboretum is staying open until 8 p.m. every night from June 1-Aug. 30. The extended hours provide much-needed opportunities for D.C. residents to visit after work. https://t.co/tPeC1auGrU

This month, we’re excited to talk about a big change we hope to see in public health and the way patient centers work with people who smoke. Read more in our community newsletter 👇

This is the first time that a center involved in a major health care center is adopting THR. This is truly an exercise in seeing how we can meet people where they are. Hopefully, this is the first of MANY systems adopting this approach!
We are excited to announce that our latest grantee is @NorthwellHealth. With our support, Northwell will integrate tobacco harm reduction into other evidence-based smoking cessation support for patients at one of its locations in Queens. Read more here:

Combustible tobacco delivers over 7,000 chemicals, many carcinogenic. Nicotine vapor products contain ~100 chemicals—dramatically reducing exposure. Tobacco harm reduction recognizes this differential risk to improve public health.

Tobacco harm reduction works–so why isn’t public health embracing it as a tool to save lives? Plus, are nicotine pouches dangerous? Read more in our March Community Newsletter from Jeff Willett, VP of Strategic Engagement: https://t.co/HujDmEK54U

It's shaping up to be a *very bad week* for D.C. The draft congressional spending bill to avert a federal shutdown would force D.C. to trim $945 million from its current fiscal year budget, which would spark immediate cuts to programs and staff. From @PattyMurray:

Commercial tobacco has always disproportionately harmed Black Americans due to predatory marketing practices. These discrepancies persist, even after the practices have ended. We're committed to closing these health gaps. Read more:

Between 1980 and 2018, menthol cigarettes contributed to 157,000 premature deaths of Black Americans. Global Action supports a ban on menthol cigarettes with a robust offramp to work toward eliminating health disparities.

Trump officials conducted more mass firings at HHS this weekend, with cuts at the FDA, CMS and emergency preparedness office. In interviews with POLITICO, health staffers described the terminations as farther reaching and far more haphazard than Trump officials have claimed.

I've been thinking a lot recently about how powerless transitions make us feel, and some ways we can try to recapture stability in ever-shifting landscapes. The secret? Accept the chaos.

In our late 20s and early 30s, I think it’s normal for our close friends circle to shrink. The training wheels of life are off, baby! Responsibilities galore! But this doesn’t doom us to loneliness — it just means that community is all the more important.

Happy 2025, friends. If you're thinking about ways to live better, may I suggest investing the time to build the slow burn of community?

I was truly blown away by RJR being Trump's top corporate donor. Based on some of the reporting by folks at Wash Post last year, I suspect this will have a big influence on the US' forthcoming nicotine and tobacco regulation.

Billionaire business leaders shelled out during the presidential election, but corporations largely didn’t weigh in.

An update!! Thank you @NinaTotenberg, I know these things aren't the most pleasant, but your readers are very grateful. It happens to the best of us.
I asked @NinaTotenberg for a correction this morning. I was polite; I don't believe it was an error made intentionally. But it's disappointing to see that this has remained online as is. This is the kind of misinfo that is harmful for a super politicized debate in public health

Corrections stink! Especially when you're reporting on a high-profile story that isn't completely within your beat. But you know what stinks worse? Letting readers down by failing to address understandable human errors. That's worse than making the mistake!

As a former reporter, I really feel for others who make stats errors in their reporting. They happen! But at the same time, it is wild that this article hasn't been corrected yet. Nina's tweet is correct, but the language in her story is not. Fed data here

Of high schoolers who currently report e-cigarette use, 30% report daily usage. #SCOTUS to determine how the FDA can regulate to prevent that.
