I’ve been away this week and got back to a nice clean house, husband and dogs all fine, everything looked ok and as it was when I left…
until I went for a shower and pulled the curtain across… 🤔😂

I was lucky enough to get up on the scaffolding and have a tour of the conservation work back in late 2021. A short photo thread…

Spending the day poking about a ruined abbey-turned-country house is one of my favourite things, especially when there’s a very atmospheric undercroft, complete with lined out plaster 😀
Rufford Abbey, Nottinghamshire ❤️

One of the many historic and beautiful homes to be found here in Cambridgeshire, although I think this one is extra- gorgeous! It dates largely from the mid-late 15th century, with some 16th century additions 😍
The enigmatic and atmospheric Abbots Bridge, Bury St. Edmunds - a monastic bridge dating to the 12th century, with 14th century additions. Such a fantastic survival! 🤩
The completely amazing and unique arrangement of what was once the west front of the old abbey church at Bury St. Edmunds - which had its facing stone removed after it closed in the 16th century, and then in the 18th century, houses were built into the rubble corework 😮🤩
The absolutely gorgeous 16th century Willington stables and dovecote, Bedfordshire. Two of the many architectural gems in this area, but these have to be some of the best!

Melchbourne, Bedfordshire
Had an unexpected adventure yesterday - a visit to a church led me past some abandoned buildings including; a manor house (with ha-ha) coach house & stables, all largely 1870’s, & an early C20th motor house!
I don’t know why they’re so appealing but they are!

I just love this simple but pretty little doorway and section of the north elevation - with large amounts of lime render surviving - at St. Nicholas’ Church in Swineshead, Bedfordshire…one of my favourite churches (and villages) in this area ❤️
Stunning Houghton House, Bedfordshire ❤️
The ruin of an early 17th century home, thought to be the inspiration for the ‘House Beautiful’ in John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress.
The 2 loggias & front porch are thought to be by Inigo Jones, the rest by John Thorpe.

Also…remnants of a lime coating to the masonry! 😍
St. Mary’s, Keysoe, Bedfordshire
St. Edmundsbury Cathedral is unusual in still being under construction throughout the C20th - with the tower, a chapel and cloisters the last to be added in the 2000’s. It’s simply stunning & has a special atmosphere. The design and craftsmanship are top notch! 🤩❤️
