BREAKING: The man who kidnapped, raped & murdered 37-year-old, mother-of-5 Rachel Morin on the Ma & Pa Trail on 8/5/23 will spend the rest of his life in prison with no possibility of parole. @wbaltv11.

Many today - including some of Rachel's children - told the court they can't stop wondering:."Could I have prevented it?".and ."I should have protected her.".

"I am exhausted. Two years of complete and utter exhaustion," Rachel's sister Rebekah wrote in a statement read aloud by the prosecutor this morning. The defendant was called "evil" numerous times across the 10 victim impact statements.

Rachel's big brother Michael stood while addressing the court. "We have felt broken, despondent, we have cried, we have screamed, we have suffered." He looked directly at the defendant, cited his faith and said "I stand here and I say I forgive you.".

"The depths of grief are equivalent to the depths of love felt," Rachel's mom Patty told the court, one of many who said they continue to suffer from nightmares, anxiety attacks & insomnia, adding "this will impact generations to come.".

24 year old Victor Martinez-Hernandez was convicted of 1st degree murder, 1st degree rape, 3rd degree sex offense and kidnapping. Today, his defense maintains the 4 counts should merge into two. The state is opposed.

After his lawyers asked for a sentence of Life with parole, the defendant spoke. Through a Spanish interpreter he thanked the court "for the opportunity to speak, but I will not be giving any testimony.".

Ms Morin's oldest daughter, now a mother herself, asked the prosecutor to read her written statement aloud: "I had to relive the worst two days of my life in order to write this," she wrote calling her mom "kind, strong, honest, determined and funny. She had the best laugh.".

. the 3 youngest recorded their statements & the audio was played in the courtroom. "She was a good mom," her son said. "Every time I see a picture of her I think about the life I had with her and my 4 sisters. I miss her.".

The court heard 10 victim impact statements today from the her brothers & sisters, her mother as well as four of her children, who are now 9, 12, 15 and 20 years old. .

Morin was kidnapped off the popular trail during her regular evening run, dragged 150 feet to a drainage culvert & beaten to death with a rock. The killer was arrested 10 months later & convicted by a jury at trial back in April after deliberating for less than 1 hr.
