I think in high school I developed this model that the most ambitious/successful people are also cutthroat and uncaring. and sure, there are people like this, but I'm no longer convinced it's universal, or even the most common case

one source of relief as I've gotten older is realizing it's possible to find people who are very ambitious and also exceptionally kind and attentive
