if you’re looking for examples, I think the best way to explain the difference is that it wasn’t perfect or polished. you can tell that the mid-00s scene kids were just throwing what they had on hand into a look versus intentionally emulating an aesthetic
in my experience it’s always the makeup or hair that gives it away. scene kids were not doing a full beat with contour and perfectly placed lashes. no one cared about perfect eyebrows back then or over lining your lips.
