This is all a reach, the far more likely answer is there is no plan, his ego is the size of a small moon, and everyone involved is just this incompetent. But I guess it's still good to game out how this could end up as a Problem™ rather than just a hilarious broken website.

Like his whole "Twitter should be a bank" nonsense, who would even consider doing that? Well there is a whole segment of the market already primed to think that real actual banks are evil and putting your money in TwitBank will own the libs.

It probably won't work for very long, Gen Z will never accept him, but if he can nestle in as part of a conservative indoctrination pipeline there's a lot of fools to be parted from their money.

That won't make back the 44 billion, probably ever, but it will provide political power to E*** and clearly the thing he wants more than money at this point is for the Important People to take him seriously.

I'm mostly just making it up but I would put up a batch of homemade cookies that the medium-term niche for Twitter ends up being "we want to be Fox News but for Millenials".

Going to shoot my shot and guess that Twitter isn't going to actually die, but will be taken down "for maintenance" for a week or two and come back as an explicitly right-leaning platform.

If you love your Masto server, I am really happy for you. But maybe hope it stays small and relatively unnoticed in the dark waters of the social internet.

But again citing email, those vendors have slowly waned against the backdrop of vertically integrated hosted services. Or maybe those two things aren't related. I don't have a lot of case studies here, just a gut feeling and a lot of unanswered questions.

Maybe someone will build "content moderation as a service" in a way Masto servers can plug into, just like the hosted spam filter vendors of yore. But the cost to operate those services is going to be steep and it will be a major system shock to fediverse users.

I wish there was a better option here but . people suck and any social tool not built around that truth will only work in small pockets with a relatively high baseline of mutual trust. If you are in one of those pockets, cherish it.

By their nature, fully open content control systems are weaker than a private one. It's also an area where economies of scale apply heavily as once a system is built, more data improves accuracy and it runtime costs are a small fraction compared to development and maintenance.
