For readers who are BIPOC, disabled, queer, fat…anyone who shares a character identity that hasn’t had a lot of range in rep, the stakes are higher. It’s not only distracting to encounter lines or scenes or entire characters that pull you out of the story, it’s alienating.

If you receive an offer from an open call you can (and should, imo) wait to negotiate until you have representation. Let agents you’re querying know you’ve received an offer. The publisher should not rescind their offer if you ask for time...if they do that’s a red flag.
So I’m gonna be really honest, open calls at major publishers scare me. We have a huge access problem in this industry, and there’s much work to be done. But opening that door without the mechanisms in place to protect marginalized authors, without top-down changes? That’s risky.

Realizing a creator and their team did not consider your experience in creating a story they wanted you to buy means realizing this story wasn’t actually for you. That is painful. That is personal. “Offended” puts a negative connotation on a reaction that is rooted in pain.

Closing a book before it ends is closing a door. If there are people available to help craft a positive reading experience, the kind that makes you feel seen and heard, that pulls you in instead of pushes you out, why not bring them on? Sensitivity reads are tools, not weapons.
