One of the greatest MYTHS in cultural psychology is collectivists (e.g. Asians) don't compete––they are a kumbaya/harmonious/lovey dovey bunch who prioritize interpersonal relationships, unlike those individualistic Americans who are self-serving and competitive. 1

What's wild is if you put in 1/10 the effort at a FAANG, you will ascend in a few years and get paid high 6-figures at a single job. A PhD student client of mine just landed a ~270K FAANG offer last month. Great wrap to her graduation.

Everyone's talking about Soham, but this Chinese woman held 16 jobs at once, coordinated with 53 agents, infiltrated HR departments to place each other into new jobs, pocketed 7 million in salary, bought a villa🐐
PSA: there’s a guy named Soham Parekh (in India) who works at 3-4 startups at the same time. He’s been preying on YC companies and more. Beware. I fired this guy in his first week and told him to stop lying / scamming people. He hasn’t stopped a year later. No more excuses.

💸 My PhD stipend was 22K/year. 🛖 Rent was 60%-150% of monthly income. 🌎 International students aren't allowed to work off-campus. ❓PhDs without a trust fund or a rich spouse: 💬 How are y'all surviving 5-year poverty-line wages?

6️⃣Pursue wealth, not money. You will help more people and sleep better at night.

4️⃣Money is not tied to hard work. Money is tied to the amount of value you provide to people who see the value you create.

The latter two are "permissionless" leverage. Write code. Develop an app ➡️ Sell to millions. Write posts. Make videos ➡️ Algorithm markets your ideas while you sleep. @thedankoe

The first two are "permissioned" leverage. We'd love to have money. We'd love to have people working for us. But both require permission from other people.

2️⃣Rich people own boring businesses: Auto dealerships, beverage distribution companies, storage facilities... (Recommend @SethS_D's book on data behind the rich and @Codie_Sanchez's wisdom on biz ownership)

Never in a million years did I imagine I'd become an entrepreneur. Last year, I started learning the language of money. 6 things I learned about rich people no one in my PhD or Big Tech ever told me: 1️⃣Rich people own.

In school, we learn, then we do. In life, we do, then we learn. Get in the game. Apply for the job. Everything else, you will pick up along the way.

4⃣If you have a PhD, you are already credentialed. You can teach MBAs. Do NOT spend💰and ⏰ getting an MBA, a second PhD, or a mountain of certificates in hopes of getting an industry job.

If you're successful, you will be teaching MBAs about organizations you've never worked at and speaking about industry experiences you've never had😎

3⃣If you want to become a business school professor 🤨, do a PhD in management, marketing, finance, or social sciences. Doing a separate MBA is useless. You will butt heads against an increasingly competitive academic job market which strongly favors R1 graduates.
