Prompting readers to cross-check meta-cognitive Information Systems (MSV) ‘on the run’ while reading continuous text is a different educational context than the isolated instruction of systematic phonics. BOTH contexts r necessary and each informs the other! @GovMikeDeWine

"Our concern is that although reading science is highly relevant to learning in the classroom setting,it does not yet speak to what to teach, when, how, and for whom at a level that is useful for teachers." (Seidenberg, Borkenhagen, & Kearns,2020,p. 121)@OHEducation @GovMikeDeWine

Visual information, although critical, is not the ‘sole source provider’ of what children use when reading text.

So it’s Both/and NOT either/or. Got it. Sounds familiar 🤔 (Im looking at you, Dr. Clay) “The researchers are careful to note that context should not be privileged above other information as careful attention to letters and sounds is vital, but not sufficient for word solving.”

#K8LitCon FULL HOUSE for Jeff Williams! The discussion about levels of support, responsive teaching, and prompting has been great! NEVER do our prompts ask children to guess. The 6% of other prompts are for AFTER the child used VISUAL information to problem-solve & to integrate

PSA: You can’t intervene your way out of a Tier 1 problem. Explicit, systematically planned Tier 1 and 2 instruction is essential in order for Tier 3 to be fully effective. Always reflect on Tier 1 and 2 first. #multiplyexcellence

Homework does little to improve achievement and can actually have negative effects, especially at elementary level. Recess however has many positive effects such as improved self regulation of emotions, improved interpersonal skills and focus! And should never be taken away.

Why are we throwing the baby out with the bath water? I agree that we need to beef up phonics instruction but why does that mean we have to throw out other forms of reading instruction, some of which have long standing results? Teachers need a full toolbox!#resultsmatter
