Sharing a new paper on associations between human milk, #breastfeeding, and #neurodevelopment for infants with #CHD. In a small, limited, sample, we found interesting differences in cognition, language, and motor scores related to #nutrition. https://t.co/IG3wFmnb97

Imo, nutrition type is the most clinically modifiable in this list!

The model that most accurately predicted NEC included preop formula feeding, intrauterine growth restriction, ischemia-modified albumin, hypoxemia, P(va)CO2/C(av)O2 ratio, flow resistance index in the superior mesenteric artery, and thickening of the intestinal wall.

Only the abstract is available in English so it's difficult to evaluate study quality, and it's not clear whether "formula feeding" meant exclusive or any formula.

New study🚨: Predictive modeling finds that infants with critical #CHD fed formula preop had 12.6x greater odds (p=0.002) of postop #NEC. This is the 4th study since 2019 demonstrating that #humanmilk protects against NEC for infants with critical CHD. https://t.co/JYBnA26ghi

It seems likely that all infants in that study (from 2014) were receiving some type of formula, but Iannucci et al. do not provide these data so it’s impossible to know. I point this out, because I have concern that this misinterpretation could be cited by future studies.

This is not accurate – Iannucci et al. mention that they found no difference in their groups of interest between formula types, but don't make any comparisons with breast milk. In fact, “breast milk” is only mentioned once in that paper.

❓ Finally, I feel that it’s important to mention a misinterpretation: The authors write: ”One study by Iannucci et al. ... found no statistical difference in feeding practices between the two groups, including the use of formula versus breast milk.”

This also probably extends to other results in the paper, but since my interest is in human milk I focused on those numbers.
