This chart shows how distinctly more people saw the recent election campaign as economically irresponsible (38%) compared to economically responsible (30%). Clearly the campaign also had some issues when it came to honesty and offering people some new and different propositions.

So, as the dust settles after the election, industry and NGOs would do well to dust off the good policies for their part of the economy that may not contain much populism but are what the country needs.

Because interestingly the data shows the electorate actually wants more of the harder “we need this” policy stuff. Things like fiscal reform and greater economic responsibility.

You can see from this chart that the younger generation of voters were more likely than other age groups to actually decide who they were voting for just shortly before they cast it.

5/5 This third chart shows public reaction to the idea of broad tax reform. Notably, 12 months ago only 24% felt the tax system was working well and didn’t need major change. Frustration with the system is now an embedded reality for most Australians.

2/ In our post election survey put in field the week after the federal election result, the data we gathered & analysed showed that Australians are up for the Govt to extend themselves. David Speers has written about this in his ABC column this morning:

Research shows voters want the government to seize the moment after its landslide win and do something big.

John Scales contributed to James Campbell’s piece in News Ltd papers on the election campaign contest in VIC. Parties are focussed on outer suburbs but our research shows cost of living, health & housing are also big issues for voters in inner suburbs.
