Early release #JNeurosci: “Internal representations are prioritized by frontal-parietal theta connectivity and suppressed by alpha oscillation dynamics” with @FrohlichLab and special thanks to @TrevorSupan (1/6)
jneurosci.org
Control over internal representations requires the prioritization of relevant information and suppression of irrelevant information. The frontoparietal network exhibits prominent neural oscillations...

What an amazing experience attending #ACNP2024! I had the privilege of meeting many inspiring scientists and got the chance to share some new results from my lab and the @FrohlichLab. Shout out to @FlavioFrohlich for his continued mentorship and support! Go team go.

One of my most favorite things to do at #ACNP2024 is to reunite with alumns who are spreading their wings - @justinmriddle and @corinne_carlton with a cool story they worked on in the the @FrohlichLab @NeuroStimCtr

This work builds on some of our findings that prefrontal-motor coupling is increased during cognitive control. Here, stroke makes a simple motor task appear like a challenging cognitive control task! However, with stroke recovery less PFC control is required.

It was a joy working with @CassidyBrainz & Jasper Mark on this! Following stroke, low-freq delta oscillations in prefrontal show increased coupling to motor beta activity during tasks require the affected extremity. Coupling strength tracked recovery.

With so many observer windows in the brain, difference of opinion is not only possible, but encouraged. A mechanism for dialogue allows observer windows to share pertinent information and work towards a shared goals. 🧵4/4

The brain possesses a rich modular landscape. We define the Cartesian Multiplex as the coexistence of many observer windows, each with a unique cognitive process. The apex can hardly keep up with this abundance of inner experience. 🧵3/4

We propose that consciousness resides at the apex of a biological hierarchy. Our capacity to perceive and act exists at an abstract level encompassing the details, but not burdened by them, with a limited interface to the underlying levels. 🧵2/4

Introducing the Nested Observer Windows (NOW) Model of Hierarchical Consciousness. What if your brain is hierarchical organized akin to a mosaic tile where each tile is itself a mosaic? Passion project of @JonathanSchool6 and myself. 🧵1/4

In experiment 2, we found that with invasive-EEG that frontal-parietal theta connectivity increased upon prioritization specifically from middle frontal gyrus to superior-posterior parietal cortex (6/6)

It was a pleasure working on this study with @MattiaPagnotta! We found convergent evidence from EEG & fMRI for a delta-frequency frontoparietal network that was separable from a theta frontoparietal network. Also, delta network was supported by caudate.
