My 'Muhammad: Prophet of Peace amid the Clash of Empires,' is out from Nation Books on Oct. 9, 2018; pre-order! Fred Donner, U of Chicago, says it "draws deeply on the text of the Qur'an and on a vast selection of the best modern scholarship to make a convincing case"

why are released Israeli hostages humanized (as they should be) as dads and kids but released Palestinian hostages are given no names or families and called 'males' and 'females' as though they were animals?
Israeli Far Right Minister of Settlements and National Missions, Orit Struck, stated that the United States "does not deserve to be labeled as a friend of Israel."
Speaking in an interview with an Israeli radio station this week, she also emphasized, "Israel is not just another
In 1972 I joined other Northwestern undergrads in blocking Sheridan Road for three days. We were protesting the US genocide against Vietnam which may have killed 5 million. We were right. You are right
As a social scientist, are you saying that is a weighted sample or a sufficient ‘N’? And would we really investigate Islam as a religion that way alone? And if I challenged you on your knowledge of Christianity would you reply that you are good friends with Richard Dawkins?
This is the United States of America for God’s sake.
Everyone should be able to turn on the faucet and drink clean water.
My Administration is investing $15 billion to replace lead pipes across the country.
The US press also made Reagan and Bush sound more coherent than they were. And they keep prefacing 'analysis' of some Trumpism by saying 'this president' says X, giving respect to their own construct
Don't miss my new book, ‘Muhammad: Prophet of Peace amid the Clash of Empires,’ (Nation Books, Oct. 2018); order now! John Esposito says ‘Best book I’ve read in years’
As a mob raided the Capitol, a Capitol Police officer gave them directions to Chuck Schumer's office, per this Times report: "But they could not find Mr. Schumer’s office. He said they asked a Capitol Police officer, who tried to direct them."
Hundreds of German police blocked streets around the Palestine Conference in Berlin. Police erected barricades around the venue on Germaniastrasse in the Tempelhof neighbourhood.
Ilhan Omar represents 708,000 people in a district that voted for her by 78.2%; nobody elected Lou Dobbs to anything at all & he represents 1 white nationalist Australian billionaire
Michigan Congressman Tim Walberg, pastor and "good" Christian, talks about his solution for

A sitting US Rep in a secret town hall feels comfortable musing positively about genocide. Listen. Share.

Every popular movement in the Middle East demanding parliamentary democracy since 1876 has been opposed by the West and often resulting gov't's have been overthrown by invasions or covert ops; only Tunisia has survived
Iraq & democracy do not easily coexist. Whether b/c of history, demography, religion, pol culture, outside influence, and/or something else, it was the wrong place (& arguably there was no right one) to project American ambitions for a transformed MidEast.
To repeat, Israel was founded on a racialist supremacist principle that requires Jews to rule, and its partisans brook no resistance to it. The congressman shares those principles and that intolerance.
Rep. Tim Walberg (R-MI) brazenly defames University of Michigan Professor
@jricole
as an "anti-Semite" for making statements about the history of Israel that Walberg doesn't like. Yet another GOP hearing dedicated to slandering private citizens for their political speech
my increasing fear is that large numbers of Americans are so poorly educated because of tax cuts pushed by people like the Lincoln Project that they do not know how to read a graph and this means nothing to them
Something like 80% of New Orleans is without power and many won't have lines repaired for 3-5 days. For context if you're not seeing this on the news, Zeta is the strongest hurricane in recorded history to have its eye directly pass over New Orleans.
Iran does not have a nuclear weapons program. It has a civilian enrichment program, making fuel for its Bushehr reactor. This inexcusably shoddy reporting in NYT is the kind of thing that got us into the Iraq War
Breaking News: Iran’s top nuclear scientist was fatally shot in northern Iran, state media reported. He was seen as the force behind its nuclear weapons program.
Dear American pundits giving Oliver North the benefit of the doubt: European and Japanese kids play video games and watch t.v. too, and Europe and Japan have a fraction the mass shootings that the US does. The difference? Easy availability of powerful firearms.
As a voter I try to be an adult. I know politicians are imperfect and they often make compromises with which I am uncomfortable. Having grown up partially in France I couldn't care less who they sleep with. But I do have red lines. Genocide is one of them.
The number of senior level Republican government officials who have contracted the coronavirus is growing by the hour. I don't think there's a parallel in the developed world to what the United States is going through right now.
George Will pretended to be a journalist while personally helping prep the addled far right wing Ronald Reagan for a presidential debate. There’s a straight line from that to Trumpism and Will owes the country an apology before he can pose as a member of the resistance

Weird & extraordinary to see this. Facebook fined $5bn. As direct result of our reporting. FTC’s biggest fine ever. Yet such is scale & size of company, it means *nothing*. Stock price actually surged on news. Facebook is well & truly out of all control
When I started my blog, which I suppose was my crank move, I thought all tenured professors would have one. Then I realized that publicly standing for Palestinian rights and human rights generally, and debunking gov't propaganda, was like voluntary exile from polite society
Do you know anyone who has used tenure to improve working conditions in academia, fight adjunctification, create lobbies in DC, improve public understanding of what academia is, etc.? Or is the point of the added security merely for writing weird crank books?
