The dollar is fine/the dollar is in trouble. Both are true - but you have to break down the difference between the national security and macroeconomic role of the dollar. That's what I try to do in a new op-ed in @nytopinion today.

Worth pointing out that the reason Brazil was at 10% on liberation day is that it runs a goods trade surplus with the US. .

We'll see what other countries we get and the rates but I think the August 1 deadline should be seen as hawkish for trade and a sign to markets that this is not all negotiation. If it was a post-labor day or another 90 day punt that would be a different signal.

10? 20? 30? The week starts with enormous uncertainty around tariffs - is the new deadline August 1? Do BRICS countries like India (reportedly) on the cusp of a deal now face an additional 10 %? Letters go out at noon… tariffs done like college admission.

The US remains an outlier amongst its peers in CBDC development, as the only country to have formally banned a CBDC. However, the US continues to engage in wholesale cross-border payments research through Project AgorĆ”, a cross-border initiative with six other central banks.

Next weekend Brazil will host the 17th BRICS Summit where leaders from two dozen counties will gather (notable exceptions including Xi &Putin). Our team @ACGeoEcon looked at the original bloc's strength - and the opportunity for BRICS if they could only agree on a shared agenda.

With the Canada trade news a reminder that in addition to tariff as negotiation and tariff as revenue driver, sometimes Trump uses tariff as punishment. The end of liberation day pause will showcase all three modes.

The question here is when the Senate would take up the nomination and then, if confirmed months in advance, a chair in waiting becomes potentially problematic for markets and signaling.

President Trump’s exasperation over the Federal Reserve’s take-it-slow approach to cutting interest rates is prompting him to consider accelerating when he will announce his pick to succeed Chair Jerome Powell, whose term runs for another 11 months.

Trump also left the G7 Summit early in 2018 (also Canada's G7). But that was the morning of the last day - and flew to meet Kim Jong-un in Singapore. Can't recall a situation like this with a foreign policy crisis. Perhaps others can.
