I came out to my family right before high school graduation, after a friend told too many people that I was gay. Word spread like wildfire in my rural hometown in South Dakota.
I had to address the whole school district, our families, and town at commencement that Sunday.

Queer South Dakotans are told they’re loved, but deep homophobia continues to permeate every area of life — from business to schools & government.
Gov. Kristi Noem (R-SD), who just signed the first anti-trans bill of 2022 into law, is asked why she thinks 90% of LGBTQ+ youth in South Dakota are diagnosed with anxiety or depression:
