Hear my story, The Mind Is Burning, which is out now from @simon.audio : #themindisburning #memoir #cult #dementia.

And so began my years long journey to care for and reconcile with a man who had neither of those things for his own son. All while I watched the disease of dementia eat away at what was left of him.

During those difficult moments in the hospital, on late night phone calls to the doctor, I could almost feel my body separating like oil in water, from my mind. I was floating in some feelingless terrain.

My dad was sick. And this wasn’t about to get any better. It now seemed that at the height of my success, I was going to have to take on another responsibility: finding out what to do with my ailing father.

Would I actually succeed? My father’s stern voice echoing in the back of my mind, convincing me that none of this mattered anyway. That I was wasting my time. But the more successful I was, the more distant that voice became. Until I got the phone call.

I told myself my drive to succeed was motivated by success, by the clear chance I now had to make my life better for myself and for my family. But it wasn’t all that. I was also motivated by fear.

If a job could be like winning the lottery, that’s how being a podcaster felt for many of us in 2018. Each day was a new opportunity, a new promising path, a new urgent project that could be a stepping stone to something bigger. But was it?.
