The first interview I ever did was with Philip. I had no idea what I was doing but he was a proper gent. Friendly, warm, funny and happy to indulge a big fan pretending to be an interviewer. Thinking of him today.
I’m very honoured to have a poem in Ionbhá - The Empathy Book for Ireland. I didn’t want to read it at the launch because I was there as MC. So Cillian Murphy got up and read it - and he gave it quite the charge. A great night at Croke Park.
I’m very pleased to have been appointed to the Board of Music Generation
@mus_gen
- thanks

Really sad news of the passing of Johnny Fean. A great guitarist and a beautiful man. For so many of us he was our first guitar hero. Thanks Johnny for everything.
Was in the queue in a coffee shop this morning. Nobody in front of me - not a single person - said hello, please or thank you to the staff. Mostly blokes in suits.
Taken in The Swan. It was my round and when I looked around I thought this would make a great picture. Of course the phone camera was no use in the dark and until recently I assumed I’d deleted it. It’s a vague image but I’m glad to have it now

I’m very grateful to
@IrishTimes
for choosing a poem from Notions for the front cover today. I’m honoured to be part of such a long standing Christmas tradition - and to be in such illustrious company.
Many years ago I was involved in a music & arts festival at the Kennedy Center in Washington. At a dinner, the piper Peter Browne and myself were seated either side of a Senator from Delaware. He was very good company. His name was Joe.

Just to say thanks for all the kind words about
@RTElyricfm
- especially about my programme and those of my colleagues. Sorry for not replying to individual tweets but I’m simply not in a position to give any clear response to you. At this stage, it’s all speculation. Many thanks
It’s like the American relatives have all gone home again. Everyone is exhausted and the place seems very quiet. Last night was a late one. Thanks

This is my wonderful colleague Deborah. She’s producer of The Works Presents and she retired today. It has always been such a pleasure to work with her. She cared passionately about the work we did. Only four programmes to go, starting tonight
@RTEOne
Back from a few days in Fermanagh. It rained and it rained and it rained but I saw and heard the curlew exactly where I hoped it would be - and I cooked sausages on a fire. Hard to beat.
This morning we mourn the loss of a truly magnificent musician and singer. Whether on stage or at home in Kerry, something life-affirming and beautiful always happened when Séamus was in the room. Comhbhrón ó chroí do mhuintir Uí Bheaglaoich uilig.
Thanks everyone for the very kind words on yesterday’s BBC Radio 4 programme on Seamus Heaney. A bit overwhelmed by the reaction. My thanks to producer

Just came out of studio and got the very sad news about Mark Lanegan. One of my most meaningful exchanges during my time presenting Other Voices was in Ashe’s with Mark. Such a great, great talent. RIP

Mystery Train coming from the attic tonight. Hope it’s coming through loud and clear

I’ll never forget seeing the brilliant Tom Hickey in The Great Hunger. We had the odd chat now and again, including one about what it’s like to be on the phone with Beckett - who insisted on calling him Mr. Hickey. Proper order. May he rest in peace.
