When thousands die, we will spend 20 years and trillions of dollars on revenge.
But when millions die, we won’t spend 20 minutes getting a free vaccine.
Liturgical Calendar A:
Advent, Christmastide, Lent, Easter, Pentecost, Trinity, Ordinary Time
Liturgical Calendar B:
New Year, Valentine's, Spring Break, 'Merica Day, Black Friday, CyberMonday, Christmas
Both have the power to shape the contours of our lives.
IMO, Young Earth Creationism is not the best way to understand the biblical creation stories, but I don't condemn those who I believe misinterpret them.
What I do think is dangerous is claiming the entire Christian faith is dependent on one's interpretation of Genesis 1-2.
Watch the short video clip attached of Andy Stanley. He is a teacher with a large flock in Georgia. How should we respond to what he is teaching in this clip?
God’s Word has a severe warnings for those of us who are teachers. God instructs us that teachers/leaders are going to…
A few months ago, I saw some Christian leaders condemning CRT because they felt the Bible called us to be "colorblind" and "powerblind."
This made me wonder what Biblical stories would look like if all identity markers were removed and voila, I made this
I’m sad and frustrated that the
#1
post on social media by the most recognized name in American Christianity is a completely fabricated and utterly callous lie.
In watching some of the
@DemConvention
on TV, it's been interesting to see the absence of God. I don’t believe America’s finest hours will be in front of us if we take God out of gov't & public life. It's God who set the standards we're to live by.
Friends, please say a prayer for me and my fellow Texas. The next few months are likely to be very divisive.
Until vaccines are available for anyone who wants to get one, it will be very difficult for leaders make decisions on how to run businesses, schools, churches, etc.
If you're hearing about 'Christian nationalism' for the first time, rather than reading tweets and hot takes, I'd recommend reading how scholars define and study it. Here's a summary definition and my review
@dallasseminary
for the book it comes from:
The guy next to me on the plane look was looking at my computer, and he stopped me to ask what I do…
A few minutes later, he goes, “Wait. You’re the guy!?! I’m a pastor and I use it all the time! No way. No way. Can I take a selfie with you?” 😂
So fun
Shout out to
@TMobile
— Our home internet has been out this week during the storm, and our laptops burned through all our hotspot data. I called to see if I could add more, and they just reset it. Thanks guys!
I used to think that if I were super well known like
@BethMooreLPM
I would be able to handle the criticism. Then I remember a time I wrote an article for
@CTmagazine
and got destroyed in the comments … except for one nice person … who turned out to be my wife using a pseudonym.
The

review of
@albpeeler
’s book can unfortunately be summarized as, “I've never struggled with the same question, so the project is invalid.”
Below is a (1) practical and (2) theological reason why I think is both wrong and possibly dangerous.
Over the weekend, I taught on church history including John Wesley sending women to preach, and I was struck again by how his defense of this is such a radical departure from 1700 years of theology.
Today at
@dallasseminary
Preview Day I got to give a short introduction to Trinitarianism. There is usually lively discussion around doctrines like immutability, but I'm always a little surprised at how surprised some are to learn that God is not male.
Friends, my book with
@OUP
has a cover and an Amazon page! I'm excited to share it with the world and talk about how evangelicals (esp. those at
@faithlife

@youversion
, and
@biblegateway
) pioneered and came to dominate the world of Bible software
Respectfully (on twitter!), I think this is the wrong takeaway.
There is a lot of room between never meeting with someone one on one and inviting someone to a hotel room after hours, and in those spaces men and women can and should work together for the gospel.
A valuable lesson we all can learn from this tragic situation: follow the
@BillyGraham
rule. If you are married, never be alone with someone of the opposite sex who is not your spouse. Never!
A few times when Jesus fulfilled the Law by breaking the law:
Matthew 8:2-3 touching a leper
Matthew 15:1-3 not washing
Mark 2:18-20 not fasting
Mark 3:1-6 Sabbath healing
Luke 6:1-4 Sabbath eating
Luke 19:45-48 temple cleansing
John 5:8-11 picking up mat
John 8:4-11 not stoning

I’m beginning to think that when churches and seminaries teach about evangelism and world religions, they should focus primarily on helping people escape the paganism of religious nationalism.
I met Eugene Peterson once and asked him for writing advice. He didn’t look at my name tag, but stared straight into my eyes and said, “Never look at the sales numbers.”
la bonne vie.
Twice in Acts, Peter calls God καρδιογνώστης which is literally "heart-knower" ("cardio+gnostis").
It's usually translated "Lord/God, who knows everyone's hearts, ..." (Luke 1:24; 15:8), but I really like that name—Heart-knower.
It's both terrifying and comforting.
Demo of
@HeyGen_Official
's new AI translation with lip sync. I tried Spanish, Chinese, German, and Hindi, and confirmed with Spanish and Chinese friends that it's pretty good:
What is Christian Nationalism?
Well, it’s a distorted merger of American exceptionalism and Christianity, where enthic Israel becomes white ... oh just watch this clip:
iOS 15 has a sweet new feature where you can copy/paste text right out of a book. I tried to make a demo, but it did a little better with

than Augustine :)
Trinitarian illustrations can go horribly wrong, but I'm hoping these icons offer some initial conceptual clarity and distinction for students (inspired by

Went to a men’s event at our evangelical Bible church this week.
There was bbq, salad, singing, Bible teaching, teenagers, old men, good questions, cigars, friendship, and sincere attempts to avoid passivity, toxicity, and loneliness.
I hope there is lots of this in churches.

I'm all for the metaphorical use of language, but when it comes to online church, I prefer to use the term "connecting" and reserve the term "gathering" for times when we are literally near one another in physical space.
Let's *connect online* and *gather in person* when we can.
This rough Venn diagram attempts to show the overlap of evangelicals, Trump supporters, and the all important factor of Christian Nationalism. The
@CTmagazine
editorial represents the green/blue, but not ‘orange’ area.
Making ice cream with my daughter today: “Why did Jesus have to be a man? Why does it seem like everything is for men, God is a man, and women are always just helpers?”
If God can be called male or masculine, then we deny that God is wholly other and affirm that he fits neatly inside finite human categories.
Conversely, if God says male and female are created in his image, then defacing or devaluing one sex is to devalue God himself.
Conference: could you send us your slides for your talk next month?
Me: sure.
Them: sir, the email is blank.
Me: Yes, that’s how many slides I have so far.
Them: when will you be done?
Me: I usually make final edits during my post-talk crash.
Them: …
A friend recently asked: "I’d like to know why you decided to make a separate list of commentaries authored by women on "
My answer: "The site has 8,324 volumes, 4,944 of which are commentaries ... but only 196 are written by women."
"Stand where she tells you to stand, wear what she tells you to wear, and do what she tells you to do."
To emasculate is to remove male anatomy.
Such "jokes" are like the reverse, cutting away all that makes a man human, removing his heart and soul, leaving only one body part.
Thanks to

who helped me start the project almost 10 years ago!
I am both happy for and frustrated by
@sandraglahn
and her new book ‘Nobody’s Mother’. Happy because it’s a great piece of research, on par with Mendenhall’s work in suzerain-vassal treaties, but frustrated because I think she change my view on “saved by childbearing”!
Wife at party: “I have a strange feeling like I kind of don’t really want to be around people. Is that how you feel sometimes?“
Me: “No. That’s how I feel *all* the time. Then, in rare instances, I feel amenable to humans other than you.”

If you [follow these tips in Cosmo], you're guaranteed mind-blowing sex.
If you [wait until marriage], you're guaranteed mind-blowing sex.
Evangelicals baptized the message without questioning the premise or the goal.
If you joined an online service, be sure to thank not only the pastor but the technical and support staff who’ve been working overtime the last 72 hours.
Many had to do something they’ve never done before and even experience churches may have had technical difficulties.
Student email:
I appreciate the way you teach and I can't really articulate "the way you teach" other than to say that it caused me to engage and learn what I thought was difficult information.

Really proud of my son: his YouTube channel on 3D animation was just approved for monetization.
My mantra with my kids has been "screens are for creation, not just consumption" and to encourage them to find what types of making bring them joy and help others.
So we might not all agree on how to answer the questions, but let's not dismiss them outright when they are fundamental to the identity of God and God's people.
The Association of Theological Schools (which accredits North American seminaries) just released their annual data report, and
@sbts
has passed
@fullerseminary
as the largest seminary in the world:
BEFORE THE FALL Y'ALL:
Male and female
He created them.
God blessed them;
and God said to them,
"Y'ALL be fruitful and
Y'ALL multiply, and
Y'ALL fill the earth, and
Y'ALL subdue it; and
Y'ALL rule."
(Gen 1:27b–28)

After submitting my thesis in June, I finally have an official PhD viva/defense date in late November!
I’m equal parts anxious as to whether I’ll pass, whether England will still be in the EU, and who will be president of the US by then.
@JoashPThomas
In class, I work to differentiate between our stated beliefs and our operational beliefs. e.g., I say I believe that God's love for me is unconditional, but I often operate as if I need to earn God's love. I say I believe God loves everyone, but I operate as if I'm special.
Many people, not just women, are asking the question, "The Bible seems to agree with society that men are superior - is that true? Does God care about women?"
Sadly, the answer is often, "Duh. Of course God cares about women. (Still, men are superior and God is masculine.)"
Look, I know churches had a lot of difficult decisions to make this weekend, but keeping services for a book signing is not courageous, it’s irresponsible.
My wife and I are wonderfully blessed to have a great marriage.
And this time of year, that often looks like one of us finding something we like on our laptop and handing it to the other to press the [Complete Purchase] button.
I'm totally on board with

- No smartphones in schools

Saying a prayer this morning for Jeff Bingham, whom I loved as a historical theology prof, who will be inheriting a very painful situation at
@swbts
, and for all the women whose lives have been damaged by men in power.
Child: During playtime that occurred many months ago and then repeatedly thereafter, words were used that were hurtful to siblings. I wish to apologize to all my sisters and brothers who were hurt by name calling that lacked clarity. Please forgive the way I said it.

It was very kind of
@KaitlynSchiess
to spend time with our Deacon team
@IrvingBibleCh
this weekend.
One thing I really appreciate about her is that she has avoided cynicism, not leading with her learning or frustrations, but with her joy, kindness, and thoughtfulness.
Dad, I heard evolution is bad. Is that true?
No, sweetie. Evolution lets us see how God created. It’s like a painting - instead of only seeing the result, evolution let’s you watch God as he paints.
Like Bob Ross?
Yes, darling. Studying evolution is like watching Bob Ross :)
Two neat confirmations this week:
1. I submitted my PhD thesis to

! Many thanks to

for their excellent guidance.
2. An article was accepted into the Journal of Religion, Media and Digital Culture for this fall. Thanks

Dr. Dorian Coover-Cox is the most amazing, student-focused, thoughtful Hebrew grammar prof ever (and all

students said "Amen").
Overjoyed to hear she's the new

journal editor:
I'm not sure why this gets under my skin so much. Maybe because I really want to think they're just misguided or just made mistakes, but they're just so relentless. I mean children's books about not helping children endorsed by a children's ministry...
@kat_armas
The woman at the well.
(not the vixenized one from most sermons; the one Jesus saw who experienced a lot of painful losses, was adept at theological discussion, and was respected in her city.)
