Saying "unearned run" reminds me of the time the woman called in very upset with a story in which we said a local prep softball team scored four unearned runs. "They earned all of those runs. THEY WORK HARD EVERY DAY," she said.
I’m in McDonald’s, guy comes up and asks my name. I figure, here comes some complaint about something I wrote or the newspaper or the Hawkeyes. But he says, “I want you to know your dad was a good man, and I’m sorry for your loss.”
The two-day attendance total at Carver-Hawkeye for the NCAA women's tournament was 28,764, the largest attendance figure among the 16 host sites and is tied for the fourth-highest first/second round total in tournament history. Iowa had the same attendance figure in '18 and '22
So you know: I am now the publisher of HawkeyeMaven, the new website with Sports Illustrated and The Maven. I'll be covering Iowa football, men's and women's basketball, wrestling, along with other sports. Same voice, new platform. Come join the community.
Someone in a hooded sweatshirt and a Big Ten Tournament champions cap, followed by a police officer, just arrived at Carver and is getting cheered. I wonder who that could be?
Mike Leach’s coaching career got its kickstart on a football field in Mount Pleasant, Iowa with Hal Mumme’s team at Iowa Wesleyan. It was amazing what was created there. Rest in peace.
I lost one of my best friends yesterday. I can’t even begin to count the games we covered together, but I know we had about a thousand inside jokes and a million laughs to go with them. And we never found a bad restaurant on the road. Rest easy.
Words are difficult to find this morning. Steve Batterson, a sports reporter at the Quad-City Times for 38+ years, died Tuesday afternoon. He was a consummate pro, a workhorse, a great teammate and such a kind-hearted man. He loved his job and did it very well. Rest easy, Batts.
Fireworks have been shot off at Kinnick Stadium. The reason? They were loaded in the cannons, and had to be shot off before the permit to have them expired.
This has been a masterful coaching job. Everyone wanted Lisa Bluder to go portal hunting after last season. She stuck with who she had, and it paid off.
Lisa Bluder: "Everybody at the beginning of the year kept saying, oh, Iowa lost so much. They lost all this offense and two starters. Everybody kept focusing on that. And we kept focusing on what we had."
The best moment you'll see all year — senior manager Jack Devlin hitting a half-court 3-pointer during the under-4 timeout, and the Hawkeyes mobbing him in celebration.
And with that, I thank you for following me during football season. I took over the Hawkeye FB beat four years ago under the saddest circumstances. I hope you've enjoyed the work, and will keep following as long as I'm in the press box.
"It felt like no matter what was gonna happen that the script in the end was going to be that Iowa won one for Chris."

By the way, thanks for following along this football season, and your support for my site. Back in June, I wasn't sure what I would be doing. It's been a fun ride. Stay on for the basketball and wrestling seasons.
My backpack is packed for tomorrow's Daily Iowan orientation (I am the part-time sports writing coach this year). I feel academic. I may wear tweed at some point.
Megan Gustafson needs 9 points to become Iowa all-time leading scorer. There are 18 Big Ten games remaining, plus at least one conference tournament game, plus the postseason. She will demolish that record.
You know who likely isn’t upset at Caitlin Clark not winning the Naismith? Caitlin Clark. Having covered her the last two years, I can say that’s not what she’s about.
I'm not even going to try to guess what Gary Barta was thinking here. "Hey, our basketball team is 6-0 and ranked No. 14. Oh, Thursday is a media availability day right before the Big Ten opener? Let's make the players and the coach answer to what are 'ongoing tensions.'"
I was having lunch in Iowa City today when I saw former WIU football coach Don Patterson, who then introduced me to his friend as “one of the best sportswriters around.” Made my day.
To everyone who has reached out over the last couple of days, thank you so much. The support I have from my friends, colleagues, and the Twitter family is amazing. I learned that after Susan's death, my father's passing, and what happened Friday, and it's appreciated. (cont.)
Woman waiting behind me in line at courtesy counter: "Can I go ahead of you? I'm in a hurry. I need to return something."
Me, waiting to buy lottery tickets: "No."
THAT is how you handle Christmas Eve at Hy-Vee.
The journalists on the Iowa beat are like a second family to me, and it was good to spend time with them today. I don't know what I would do without them. Thanks to all of them for making today easier.
On this day 5 years ago, after cameras took all kind of pics of the heart and arteries, I was told that in a few days they would be stopping my heart for a little while for some maintenance work. Appreciate every beat you have, every day. Happy Heart Day, everyone.
The national player of the year gets a chance, in her senior year, to play in her hometown with her top-10 nationally-ranked (and 2023 national runner-up) team against a team that was in the NCAA tournament last season. And the men’s team is part of the doubleheader. That’s it.
Iowa players will be wearing "TaterTough" t-shirts in warmups today to support Tate Schaefer, an 11-year-old from Williamsburg who is undergoing radiation treatment for a tumor in his brain stem.
Megan Gustafson is being honored for breaking Iowa's scoring and rebounding records. A reminder that it's only Jan. 3 in her senior season, so those two records are basically destroyed.
Going through the transcript from the women's game and seeing Caitlin Clark tell Jeff Linder she hoped he was OK from his tumble was one of the best things I've seen so far this week.
