🚨 With a verified and extensively validated 3D model that reproduced the Vajont landslide-tsunami, the 2017 Piz Cengalo, the 2023 Brienz, and the 2025 Blatten events, our tool offers a robust complement to existing approaches for enhanced risk assessment in complex terrain. 7/8.

For instance, our pre-event prediction used a slightly more conservative friction value of 0.2, within the lower range of historical observations, resulting in a runout that extended approximately 100 meters beyond the actual deposit. 6/8.

It took approximately 105 seconds for the flow front to come to rest. Comparison with seismic data may help assess the accuracy of this estimation. As more data becomes available, the simulation undergoes additional refinements. 5/8.

We also observed maximum slope-normal velocities around 50 m/s, indicating airborne phases in the flow, features we were able to capture thanks to the fully 3D nature of our model. 4/8.

📐 Our simulation shows a very near miss of Weissenried, with flow velocities exceeding 100 m/s and maximum flow heights around 150m due to a shock wave forming in the lower gorge which is misaligned with the main flow direction. 3/8.

Here, we used a total release volume of 9 million cubic meters and a basal friction coefficient of 0.23 which was back-calculated from the observed runout. This value fits well within the range reported for similar volumes in past events (Schneider et al., 2011). 2/8.

Snow has arrived, and with it, the return of #avalanche #danger ‼️. Using a 3D elastoplastic Material Point Method (#MPM), calibrated with friction & strength from in situ measurements, we can reproduce avalanches with high fidelity.

✨Congratulations to Lars Blatny for publishing his model for #cohesive, #compressible #granular flows in @JFluidMech ! This new elasto-viscoplastic model opens up new ways to simulate materials as sand & snow in both #solid & #fluid states, including complex #fracture processes
