This is the cover of my book on failure, due out at the end of September. Luckily I didn't fail to write it (but it was a close thing) https://t.co/Z4mLQGYwNP

In his essay ‘Inventories and Undoings’, the short-story writer Charles Baxter argues that ‘something in the nature of fiction loves inventories and lists’

I wrote about the science of sleep and the power of the dark (reviewing two books by Annabel Abbs and Kenneth Miller) here
the-tls.com
Human beings are conditioned to fear the dark as a place of danger, devilry and unmeaning. According to a survey quoted in Annabel Abbs’s Sleepless, 40

I'm always recommending this podcast to students - it's great
I’m late to this but @TheFrankSkinner Poetry Podcast is superb. Warm, accessible, funny but brilliantly knowledgeable and insightful about the poets who are nearly all contemporary. You can also hear me chat to him about it (amongst other things) on @BBCRadio4 Loose Ends tonight

Does anyone else remember a photographic project from maybe 15/20 years ago, where passers-by were photographed smiling at something and then asked what they were smiling about? I thought it might be a Stephen Gill/Jon Ronson collab but can't find anything

On the spectre haunting the academy: ChatGPT. From a piece I wrote about the future of writing in a content-providing age (open access, link below)
I wrote this critical-creative piece, 'You are not an angel', in the form of a letter to my students, but it's really about how we see writing in an online age. We must write imperfectly like humans, not angels. It's open access.
