Sean Manaea age 22 (+A).3.11 ERA / 3.35 xFIP, 28.4 K%, 10.5 BB%, 17.9 K-BB%, 42.6 GB%, .224 BAA. Andrew Sears age 22 (+A/AA).3.41 ERA / 3.45 xFIP, 25.7 K%, 8.0 BB%, 17.7 K-BB%, 41.9 GB%, .224 BAA. Not necessarily comparing the 2, but both are lower slot lefties w/ similar stuff.

Does this mean McGonigle will hit 40-50 HRs a year at the big league level? Probably not. But the power he's showing this season is still very impressive + encouraging. Combined with his hit tool, plate discipline + all-around game, there's a reason he's so highly regarded.

Important additional context: this is technically McGonigle’s age 20 season. Listed age 21 seasons for the current MLB HR leaders because Raleigh, Schwarber + Judge were all in college at age 20. Also note that those 3 were all playing at levels lower than McGonigle is currently.

Power was a question mark for Kevin McGonigle coming out of the draft. In '25, at +A/AA, he's homered in 4.8% of his PAs. Just turned 21. '25 MLB HR leaders at age 21. Raleigh (-A): 4.8%.Schwarber (-A,A,+A): 5.8%.Ohtani (NPB): 5.8%.Judge (age 22/A,+A): 3.0%.Suarez (+A/AA): 1.6%.

Awesome sequence from Kyle Finnegan vs Maikel Garcia. Teams see Finnegan's throwing more splits now. He throws 2 straight to the 1st hitter + gets a groundout. Garcia likely sitting split 1st pitch; FB instead. Same w/ pitch 2, FB instead. No way he gets 3 straight FB; he does.

Tommy Kahnle's last 4 games:. 4.1 IP, 0.00 ERA/2.21 xFIP, 26.7 K-BB%, 66.7 GB%. Small sample, but encouraging. 25 games left in the regular season. Winning is the main goal for DET, but getting the BP in order is another important goal. Kahnle getting back on track would be huge.

Paul Sewald could be big for DET. From '21-'23, 203 RPs had at least 100 IP. He ranked 40th in ERA, 12th in K%, 11th in K-BB% + 11th in BAA. The '25 ERA is up but a 12.5 GB% seems unsustainably low. 395 RPs have at least 10 IP in '25; Paul ranks 32nd in K-BB% + 52nd in HardHit%.

Rafael Montero has been great in 4 of his outings w/ DET. His pitch mix in those 4 (vs the not as great outings):. Split: 51.1% / 29.7%.Fastball: 34.4 / 50.Sinker: 2.2 / 8.1.Slider: 12.2 / 12.2. Command is key; the split is real (.260 xwOBA). Would love to see more sliders (.090).

The Detroit Tigers went 1-12 from 7/9-7/26. Since 7/27, the Tigers are 19-11. The bullpen has been a major factor in the turnaround, with a 3.01 ERA since 7/27 that ranks 5th in MLB, and a .201 BAA that ranks 3rd. The peripherals aren't as strong, but it's a good sign for DET.

The Charlie Morton trade could end up being one of the more meaningful moves of the deadline. 120 pitchers have at least 20 IP since 8/1; during that time Morton ranks. 17th in xFIP (3.26).9th in K% (30.5).20th in K-BB% (22.0). Morton's career postseason.80 IP, 3.60 ERA, 26.8 K%.

Detroit Tigers fans were rightfully asking for a high leverage, swing + miss RP at the deadline. It appears they got one in Kyle Finnegan. 295 pitchers have at least 10 IP since 8/1. During that time Finnegan ranks. T-1st in ERA.4th in xFIP.T-10th in K%.8th in K-BB%.T-22nd in GB%.
