Suggestion 2: The first thing you do, settle on the size of a standard door. This is the fixed star in your universe, from here on you can change all the sizes and speeds to your hearts content, but never touch that door

One way of faking that dream of controlling a Fast Guy in a Big World is to fill the world with inconsequential props, grass or trees or something that can whiz by. Making you feel fast as you are actually moving very slowly A to B. I think this is how open world games do it

What feels like a normal doorway is actually the size of a church gate. The warthog feels like it should be the size of a car but is actually big like a little cabin. The marines are strangely small. etc

Some industry games show signs of it. I think Halo CE is one of them, they went through that weird RTS phase etc and there probably was a lot of tuning the scale. imo there are plenty of remnants of wonky scale in the final game

Dont think this is an issue for industry games where they nail everything down in a design document, but if you're an indie you can get stuck in an infinite tweak here

very easy to get stuck in this: fast is fun, make the character faster! Now the level feels claustrophobic and cramped, make level bigger. Now char feels slow, make them faster... etc

Something I wish I knew earlier in 3D gamedev: making your character faster is the same as making your level smaller. Making you level bigger is the same as making your character slower
