James Baldwin (b. 02 August 1924) was an American writer and civil rights activist. His 1st novel, Go Tell It on the Mountain (1953) has been ranked as one of the top 100 English-language novels of all time, and his 2nd book, Giovanni’s Room (1956), is considered a gay classic.

Laird Cregar (b. 28 July 1913) was an American actor known for his villainous roles in I Wake Up Screaming (1941), This Gun For Hire (1942), and The Lodger (1944). A gay man who battled with his weight, he died at age 31 from binge dieting undertaken to secure leading man roles.

With his fresh look, in the 1930s, actor Ross Alexander (b. 27 July 1907), became a favorite in Hollywood playing 2nd leads in films such as Flirtation Walk (1934) and Captain Blood (1935). But as a closeted gay man, he became acutely self-destructive, ending his life at age 29.

On July 25, 1985, from the American Hospital in Paris, came word that one of the world’s most famous actors was suffering from AIDS. But what shocked was not that he had a fatal disease, but (by implication) that Rock Hudson was gay. 40 years later, we honor him with this tribute

E. F. Benson (b. 24 July 1867), British writer best known for his ghost stories and the “Mapp and Lucia” series of (6) novels. Discreet about his homosexuality, nevertheless, his work frequently displayed a subtle and wryly entertaining campiness.

James Whale (b. 22 July 1889) was an English director whose films in Hollywood at Universal (Frankenstein, The Old Dark House, The Invisible Man, and Bride of Frankenstein) became classics and defined the horror genre of the 1930s. Whale was openly gay throughout his career.

Hart Crane (b. 21 July 1899), poet best known for his collection White Buildings (1926) and the long poem The Bridge (1930), inspired by the Brooklyn Bridge. Throughout his life, he had many homosexual relations which were described in, or otherwise influenced, his poetry.

Mauritz Stiller (b. 17 July 1883) the gay Finnish film director best known for discovering Greta Garbo and bringing her to America. Stiller's contribution to the motion picture industry was recognized in 1960 with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Arthur Laurents (b. 14 July 1917) with his long-term partner Tom Hatcher. Hatcher was an aspiring actor whom Gore Vidal suggested Laurents seek out at the Beverly Hills men's clothing store Hatcher was managing at the time. The couple remained together for 52 years.
