We agreed TV GUIDE missed a bet in not having Patty Duke (who played Martha) on the cover with him instead, or Jaclyn Smith. He said her Sally Fairfax character’s historical romance with Washington was based on a single letter blown up by the producers to add romantic conflict!.

The issue includes Wallace “interviewing” the real Washington (actually biographer James Flexner) and an interview with Bostwick, detailing how he beat out Jon Voight for the role. Barry was interested to see how CBS programmed the show (skipping Monday when the Oscars were on).

Pleased to have Barry Bostwick at #GalaxyConNewOrleans sign my April 7, 1984 issue of TV GUIDE. He said it’s not a composite; Mike Wallace was really posing for an interview with Barry as the title character from his GEORGE WASHINGTON miniseries, which aired that week on CBS.

Heading for Louisiana, I recall the first game I attended as an LSU student: an exhibition against Australia where Shaquille O’Neal, just 18, caused the entire backboard stanchion to buckle. SI’s report actually understates how crazy it was. Unforgettable.

Having interviewed Jim a lot, I'd been getting to know him better at conventions; we randomly talked for half an hour in Richmond this year about Marvel's management and ownership issues back in the day. Glad to have had those chances — he was always gracious with his time.

I knew of Jim's role and his writing for years as a fan; others did, too. Everyone had an opinion of him. The issue of Comics Buyer's Guide reporting his departure from Marvel was its best-seller of the 1980s. He's a big part of the reason Marvel survived those tumultuous times.

Mark Waid has shared the sad news on Facebook that Jim Shooter has passed. As editor-in-chief at Marvel, Jim took a publisher that was flailing in the 1970s and set it up for success in the 1980s.
