I'll talk again about losing Humana - an obvious loss. Along with so many more and more recent and coming losses. I am less concerned with bringing them back than figuring out why they failed so we can make new mistakes.
I am as sad about the loss of the Humana festival as anyone, but my feelings are a little more complicated than that. First I will say that I am rooting so hard for the current wonderful staff there. I want them to succeed. It is an important theater to that community.

I want new ideas. We can build them on or be inspired by old ones, but clearly the old ones didn't work or we wouldn't be in this (waves arms, looks around) mess.

Just off a call talking about this essay and all the essays so many essays coming out now about the sad scary moment. My friend was surprised that as a historian I wasn't more upset about the losses or into resurrecting ideas from the past. It's actually because I'm a historian.
