I’m starting to understand who would’ve been fine with firehoses turned on protestors in the 50s and 60s. “Those idiots did it to themselves.” It was evil then. It’s still evil now. Only now it comes with laugh emojis and applause.

All these people with their big opinions so quick to blame the man who was shot today? I would put cash down that says none of you have ever protested anything. You may want to ask why you’ve never needed to protest.

In every movie and book, the people who shoot unarmed civilians and push propaganda are the bad guys. Interestingly, they are also the bad guys in the history books.

X should be renamed “What is my tribe furious about today and who do we all want to attack?” Not as catchy but much more accurate.

Chances are they didn’t start out so progressive or conservative. Chances are they would not have changed so much. Being cast out is what intensified the transformation. It was the fuel.

But this is what happens when communities are rich in doctrine and poor in grace. You can’t cast someone out and then act surprised when the community that receives them becomes the people they identify with. (2/2)

I’ve seen it again and again: Someone starts out conservative or progressive. They ask the wrong question—and they’re cast out. The other side shows them welcome. Over time, they change. And the ones who exiled them act shocked by the transformation. (1/2)

Maybe something where people have a chance to prove their innocence? Let’s keep workshopping this. We’ll come up with something.

“Due process shouldn’t apply to illegals.” And how will we know if they are illegals? How do I even know you’re legal? “Because I am. I have rights to be here.” Seems like we need a way for you to prove that…. If only we had a legal process for a situation like this….

You can change your theology, but if you don’t change your relational style, you’re just dressing up your personality in new clothes. New team. New language. Same old tactics.

Why did my generation like melancholic grunge so much? Imagine going to a Bluey movie and they kill Bluey in the first act. Or a Dora the Explorer movie set in a dystopian strip mall. That’s what us 80s kids got—the death of Optimus Prime, and He-Man as a mall cop.

Two signs our hidden wounds need healing: when things that should roll off our back hurt deeply, and when things that should hurt deeply roll off our back. Are you hurt easily or do you refuse to be hurt? Either one is a signal that something is wrong.

Next Tuesday, most of us are voting for who we *don’t* want in office. America deserves leaders we can actually believe in—not just ones we settle for because we despise their opponent.

Sometimes, I read articles from my fellow Christian thinkers and I am reminded: Anyone can be complex. The real challenge? Taking something complicated and saying it *simply.* If the common person can’t understand, your message isn’t ready. Rambling is easy. Editing is grace.

Next week, I begin work producing a new show for Christianity Today about the intersection of science, faith and wonder. It’s a show that will explore people’s personal stories about the big questions of life and the awe they experience through their discoveries.

One thing I admired about Tim Keller was how he tried very hard to represent others' views accurately and not put words in other people’s mouths. This intellectual honesty made him more trustworthy, which made his counter-arguments even more persuasive. We need more of this.

Our little tree has been dropping seeds on the forest floor for years. Now that we’ve chopped it down, they can finally get the sunlight and space to grown on their own. We can’t wait to see what God does through our alumni and community in the years to come.
