Dollar stores do serve a real need--they're often geographically accessible and allow folks with limited means to stretch their dollars. And models like Dollar General Market (while definitely the exception, not the norm) provide a number of healthy foods. 3/.

On the one hand, the choice shouldn't be between supermarkets & dollar stores. The former were made for sprawling, middle-class suburbs and the latter for rural/urban neighborhoods with low to moderate incomes. Banning dollar stores won't make supermarkets work in those areas. 2/.

On the face of it, it answers some of the main critiques of food desert research. It tries to incorporate the limited mobility options faced by low-income households. The Yelp data provides information on price differences even within grocery chains. Both good things. 2/.

At our 2nd house, someone through a pumpkin through the window in our front door on Halloween. Burglars kicked in our back door in the middle of the night. One of our cars was stolen. Each time, the police showed up, asked a few questions, & gave us a card with a case number. 10/.

The 11 year old in that house loved Animal Planet and had hopes of becoming a veterinarian. 9/.
