Three years after presenting it as a short paper at @ieeevis 2022, UMATO is now introduced in @ieee_tvcg! Huge thanks to the collaborators and also contributors who helped in making UMATO a stable open source!! Preprint: https://t.co/ocLrExVoe8 Repo:

Uniform Manifold Approximation with Two-phase Optimization (IEEE VIS 2022 short) - hyungkwonko/umato
UMATO is a dimensionality reduction method that improves UMAP to preserve global and local structures well. #ieeevis

Stop Misusing t-SNE and UMAP! (1) "Verifies" common misuse of t-SNE and UMAP, (2) reveals the causes behind, and (3) guides how to use them properly @ieeevis review said "I do not agree" π₯² Still, we will keep our effort to disseminate this message π€£ https://t.co/t7p0mRWXx3

Now is a new application period, during which I received several requests to share my application materials for the Google Ph.D. fellowship. As I benefited from publicly shared resources for my application, I am also making my materials available. https://t.co/83qlqzvOIR
Thrilled to receive the Google PhD Fellowship in Human-Computer Interaction and Visualization!! Special thanks to my advisor, Jinwook, wonderful collaborators, @SeoulNatlUni, and @ieeevis community for providing me unlimited support!! Also appreciate @GoogleAI for the honor!!

Hope every "student" has successfully submitted their papers to @ieeevis #vis2025!! Now it's time to apply for a student volunteer (SV)! (~Aug 16th) Being an SV helps you connect with fellow students and seniors; it also provides financial support!! https://t.co/4bUQvKZ8rN

Actually, this research is a "prequel" of our previous @ieeevis paper "Classes are not clusters", which we resolved the same form of using class labels for evaluating dimensionality reduction projections!! https://t.co/feUpblQJsd
arxiv.org
A common way to evaluate the reliability of dimensionality reduction (DR) embeddings is to quantify how well labeled classes form compact, mutually separated clusters in the embeddings. This...

We quantify the degree to which class labels match with intrinsic clusters, which we denote as cluster-label matching! By doing so, we "inspect" whether class labels, which are often used as ground truth clusters for evaluating clustering metrics, truly form clusters or not

Excited to share that our latest paper on reliable clustering validation has been accepted to IEEE #TPAMI !! It took over three years to publish this paper....but the team finally made it available to share with the world!! Link: https://t.co/688jB92uiW (1/n)

This evening, members of the core committee, VEC, and IEEE met with the TradeWinds Island Grand Hotel manager for an update on the status of the damages. Unfortunately, the damages are significant enough that we will be unable to hold IEEE VIS 2024 on their property.

I think this take is pretty spot on. The HCI community has spent so much energy on flag-planting papers and low-hanging fruit with LLMs. This trend has taken resources and attention away from deeper, more rigorous, and more impactful work. Weβre following MLβs race to the bottom.
Thanks, β¦@IanArawjoβ© for this important and timely article. I am also fed up with seeing so many studies that are LLM-wrappers. LLM Wrapper Papers are Hurting HCI Research

Thank you for the invite --- was an exciting and interesting experience to share my research with undergraduates π
Invited Talks are the students' favorite part of CSE333 Intro to HCI every year. This year we were lucky to have @hcibabyuran, @jeonhyeon11, and @taejunkim_13! Thanks for sharing your exciting HCI research in different time zones and traveling with a suitcase for in-person demo!

Invited talk at UNIST, hosted by @genialee π Such a beautiful nature surrounding the campus. Also enthusiastic undergraduate students throwing sharp questions! What a nice day. Now Iβm ready to grind myself for the CHI submission π

HCI researcher's paradox: step 1: Realize that we shouldn't just use LLMs to solve any problem. Step 2: Go ahead and apply LLMs to some random problem anyway and write a CHI paper about it. P.S. I might be a victim of this paradox too :-)
