i realized that basically every kid who grew up in the late 80s/90s has a picture like this because getting a computer was a Very Big Deal.
show me yours!
so much of tech culture depends on "growth mindset" and i'm realizing how much that's seeped into my life outside work (e.g. bike faster, keep being better photographer, read more, etc.)
i'm trying to do stuff with no expectation to be good or to grow. it's so freeing. just do.
name me a more painful activity than typing in your 1password-generated, ultra secure, special-character inclusive netflix password in your tv using just the arrow keys on your remote control
I'm hiring for a ⭐️very very very special role⭐️ on the FigJam team. An IC Design Lead that will be my closest working partner, as the team scales.
🧵 Here's how I see this role...
so excited to be launching this jacket into the world 🌟
it's been a journey. i bought it during quarantine and had to keep it from the world. finally, i get to share it with you.
Maybe a 🌶 take — but I wish candidates from other roles (e.g. PM, eng) all had portfolios, sorta like designers do.
Portfolios take a lot of time to put together... But understanding the context, process, and final output is a lot higher signal than most interview questions.
In case you missed it: we launched FigJam today at Config!
There are a lot of product detail tweets out there and also in our talk:
One rewarding thing, personally however, has been reflecting on what I’ve learned from it and the people I learned from:
OK, I rarely have Design Takes™️, but my warm take is that visual design is totally learnable.
But for some reason, we're not great (as an industry) at training people to get better at it and as a result, designers are convinced that they'll never get better at it.
👋 I’m hiring!! Again! This time, for a product design manager on the FigJam team
@figma
.
Manager roles are a dime a dozen, so here's a thread about what's different ↓
1. Upleveling craft and design work
2. Ownership of a frontier of our business
3. Calibre of the team
👋 We're hiring for a few roles across the
@figmadesign
design team, but I wanted to highlight one near and dear to me.
We're looking for someone with strong craft and systems thinking chops to lead design on FigJam.
Some highlights from last year👇
Waterloo is no frills AF and has a greater socioeconomic spread compared to US schools we get grouped with.
It made so many people socially mobile. It was a chance to build up a resume without wealth or family connections. It gave us hunger and a chip on the shoulder.
i’m finding more and more joy out of hobbies where i make stuff and i _don’t_ share it with the world
working in private is a tiny luxury and i don’t need anyone’s approval except my own
I worked on a thing and now you can use the thing (to create templates in Paper)! Really proud of the whole team that worked on this 😊😊😊
@adamlafave
@Dropbox
@DropboxDesign
In true collaborative fashion, it was magical to see people all across the company (tons of non-designers!) make these cursors. Here's a sneak peeksie of how it came together.
also please refer to them as "lil' [cursor]" thank you
Launch day
@figmadesign
!! This team executes like no other team I've been on.
One magical thing has been watching how the team's started to use all these new features internally and how they've changed the way we work.
Here's a few ways we've been jamming... 👇
FigJam turns 1 today. I'm reflecting on how much I've grown up with this lil' piece of software and caught off guard by how emotional I am.
It's been heartening to see all the ways people love FigJam already; taxing to be excruciatingly aware of all the ways it could be better.
This got overshadowed by That Other News, but FigJam won
@FastCompany
's Innovation by Design award last week!!!1!!1!
Proud of the design team (obv), but also the rest of the FigJam fam. I feel lucky that this whole team cares deeply about design 🥲
👋 We just put up our openings for Product Design New Grad and Intern (2021).
If you're self-motivated and excited about building tools people depend on, definitely apply!
New grad:
Intern:
we have these little magnetic word things in our office's conference call rooms and people often thread them together to make phrases/poems.
this is my favourite one so far:
in the time of covid-19 in san francisco my thoughts and prayers go out to all the early-20-something new grads who can't eat catered lunch for the first time
take vitamins / preserve your energy / make sure water is boiling before adding pasta to pot
love living with a significant other who also works in tech because our tv screensaver is a shared google photos album that's 40% expense receipts and app screenshots
do you ever watch a movie, and it’s fine, but then a character pulls out their phone and it’s like… the goofiest looking UI you’ve ever seen? and the entire movie loses credibility to you??
if these lines are 6 feet then pythagorean theorem would suggest that each person is only about 4 feet away from their nearest neighbours!!!
if you are standing in square formation, please make sure you're measuring the edges and not the diagonals thank you
waterlooo discourse is wild because we never felt proud when we went there.
it never felt magical, or special. we were just fighting to survive. it is the kirkland signature of universities.
A lot of the canonical way we build products today is based on methods developed at ads-based, consumer companies. e.g. A/B testing, success metrics, impact prioritization, design systems, etc.
What if these methods shouldn't actually be applied to other types of software?
Today also marks 2 years at Figma for me.
I'm warm and fuzzy reflecting on all the ways this little (but not so little now!) company has grown and helped me grow along with it.
Beyond excited to share that
@figmadesign
has closed a $200M Series E funding round led by Durable Capital! Morgan Stanley’s Counterpoint Global is also participating along with other new and existing investors. (1/5)
We noticed that people hacked their way into cover images because our defaults often didn't show enough detail.
You can set thumbnails to use any frame that best represents your file, and it'll update as the frame gets updated.
👏🏼
@kiko_lamb
@meaganrgamache
🆕: Today we’re releasing custom file thumbnails.
Now you can select any frame and set it as the file thumbnail, adding helpful context when you're browsing through files.
Breaking News: President Trump will sign an executive order suspending foreign work visas, barring hundreds of thousands of people from coming to work in the U.S. The move includes the H-1B program for high-skilled workers and several other categories.
One weird thing I love doing is building taste — e.g. in fashion, interior design, wedding aesthetic, UI design, etc.
It's like, oddly fun to hone an opinion on what I, uniquely like, and develop an eye for something.
Issa thing!
We've been thinking about how Figma can help designers work with not only other designers, but with eng, PMs, writers, and even people outside of their teams. Here's our first foray into a long journey to come.
I really like this trend of making [technical thing] for designers' guides. Not just because they're for designers, but because they make traditionally intimidating topics accessible to people in general.
We're launching a new and improved FigJam AI 1.5 today!
I'm kicking off some hiring soon (watch this space!), so here's a prompt I used to rethink the interview process...
More prompts to steal here:
a very wholesome thing i started doing is just writing down things i've learned—sorta like a gratitude journal, but learning
i look at it every once in a while as a reminder that i (like other humans) am capable of progress. it’s one of the most hopeful feelings i have.
One of the earliest pieces of feedback I got in my career was to work on being more confident and clear when I spoke in front of people.
But uh, I somehow slipped into doing my 2nd talk yesterday at Config?? Thank you for listening and for all your kindness in this journey 💗
me, when things are getting serious in slack DMs and i need to switch to Business Writing
Jenny Wen at 9:59 AM: oooo hahaha h ha lol
Jenny Wen at 10:00 AM: Hi! 👋 Hope you had a good weekend. I was wondering if you could...
This is the first week that the pandemic and all its by-products have felt unendurable to me.
Everyone is different and I'm lucky to have not felt this way until now. But, this is the week.
why do vegetarian options always gotta be vegetables trying really hard to be meat?
vegetables are delicious and deserve to be eaten for their true selves.
Hi! It's Maker Week
@figmadesign
this week.
I've run the design new grad + internship programs the past couple of years and was thinking about writing a blog post about it this week. What would you want to learn?
i just copied a CSV list and pasted it into figjam to see what would happen and it automatically created a sticky for each row AND I GASPED OUT LOUD
truly have never been more delighted by a product
@figma
Writing has always helped me express parts of myself that I haven't felt quite ready to say out loud. So, I'm entirely scared for you to read this.
It was a total honour having
@desklunch__
as the platform for this. Subscribe to them!
A feeling I've been having lately:
San Francisco is like "The Giving Tree" to tech people. We take so much from it, ask so much of it, and give so little back to it.
Helloooo, our new grad roles
@figmadesign
are up!
Come be a fresh face on our mighty, thoughtful, collaborative, detail-oriented, emoji-reacting, weird (in a good way), and ever-evolving product design team.
