Love remained her very own crux. However ironic. However painful. However doubtful.

Yet, love stayed inside, as though making home in between her ribs. It rested on top of the things she needed most, buried beneath the ones she would need much later.

In the end, her bags were unpacked. It took a long time but she did it anyway.

It had a way of slipping into the empty spaces of her suitcase, between the mountain of clothes she had to push with her knees to fit inside. Love seeped through every fiber of her, exhaled through her words, only to return bigger each time she closed her eyes.

When she first arrived at her flat, she tried. She ended up sitting for two hours going through her old digicam and finding things she never remember taking. Old love lingered there: quiet, persistent, impossible to misplace. It followed her wherever she went.

The thing that came after packing is to unpack. The first rule of unpacking your bag, is to never look too long at the things you’ve brought with you. Give everything a place, a hook to hang from, a drawer to be rediscovered in two months’ time.

Another thing she packed was her worn-out bedsheet. It was far too big for her single bed so she had to tuck its corners into the back of her mattress. But it smelled like home, like laughter once caught in its threads, so she didn’t mind in the slightest.

Alas, leaving home and whatever uneven, abysmal love it has packed her to the brim never followed the same rules. The drive to her new flat was only fifteen minutes away. The first thing she packed was a ‘no random visits’ warning sign.

Jennifer got better at packing her things after that. Leaving became something she could prepare for. It no longer felt as daunting when she knew exactly what she needed for the next adventure.

She once put her then-boyfriend’s Spiderman pin on her bag instead of her allergy pill and nearly had to go to the emergency room. She ended up getting a pill from some shady pharmacy and let him brush past her ‘got allergic reaction today lol’ message as if it were nothing.

Her second mistake was letting the dormitory cat stayed too long in her empty suitcase, while she sorted through her things, deciding what to bring for her senior-year apartment. The cat meowed nonstop once removed. She still cried on random days over it.

Jennifer made her first mistake at the very age of eleven, putting her beloved bunny doll on her mother’s carrier instead of her backpack. She cried all throughout the flight to New York. Mother threatened to leave her at the airport. She had to gulp back all her tears after.

The first rule of packing your bag is to put the things you won’t immediately need at the very bottom of your bag.

Sometimes, people forget that tomorrow isn’t promised. We are so used to its presence that we forget even the next second of breath doesn’t come as easily. Perhaps they think of love the way they think of tomorrow: it carries on braveness one doesn’t always have.
@indecentpals i’ve read this yesterday... why do people act like they have tomorrow to love someone?

To be so familiar with someone’s scent you have to physically condition yourself just from the slight whiff of it. To know someone so terribly and wonder if love only happens when the knees are bent and the pleas are repeated.
