due to obviously relevant reasons, would you like to know how andy finally convinced rafe hollister to get a tetanus shot after rafe refused to let the county nurse vaccinate him
hearing a lot of "goodbye twitter" and not a lot of "we'll unite and become 100 million+ ungovernable jean ralphios and he will regret the day he ever heard of twitter"
yes there's a CDC eviction moratorium in this country right now but i just met a houston couple who filed a CDC form, got $7k in rent relief, their landlord received it but decided to *return it* and evict them anyway, then CPS took their baby away because they were unhoused
a mom who lost her daughter in the uvalde school shooting is asking people not to share a washington post story coming out thursday that she says includes graphic photos the family does not want shared
hear me out what if newspapers had an online ~day pass~ option that cost the same as buying the print edition that day. instead of just subscribe or not
since they've been home most of the time during the pandemic, they've literally never been apart from their 18-month-old for more than an hour or so in her whole life. they're going through unspeakable trauma.
a houston resident says two men with a GOP-connected grass-roots group wearing texas election network badges knocked on doors in her neighborhood asking residents to sign an affidavit verifying their voter addresses "under penalty of perjury"
story:
a renter applied for TX rent relief and *was evicted while waiting for help* and then the state offered her $6k in rent relief (too late) and then instead of sending it to her they sent money directly to the landlord that had already evicted her
so that's where we are right now.
the TX house tonight debating a bill to abolish the elections administrator in harris county
rep. nicole collier asks rep. briscoe cain (he's house sponsor of the bill) who the harris county elections administrator is. he doesnt know.
Today I was at one of the Harris County eviction courts to watch a docket and they had a little Christmas tree in the courtroom decorated with handcuffs.
Carla Reed and Hervis Rogers, the last two voters at Texas Southern University. Finally got their "I voted" stickers. They waited six hours, until just after 1am.

today the TX legislature could vote to abolish the elections official in the state's largest county. this is new territory; no one i spoke with was aware of any precedent for the state getting rid of a local official in just one county without its consent
for my next thread we will be watching A FACE IN THE CROWD (1957) in which andy griffith warns america of the dangers of giving too much political power and influence to erratic media personalities
BREAKING: ahead of a midnight deadline to pass SB7 (the tx GOP voting bill that opponents describe as "jim crow 2.0") *democrats have broken quorum and left*

kimberly rubio, who lost her daughter lexi in the uvalde shooting, testified to congress today. everybody needs to hear what she said. she didn't ask for fewer doors, armed teachers, or hardened schools. she asked for gun control laws.
"this is one of the precise situations i have been most worried about this election: people in shadowy volunteer groups who suggest in one way or another that they are acting under official authority questioning the eligibility of voters by knocking on their doors" -
@jcslattery
trial just ended & i'm just sitting here in disbelief that there was so little media coverage of a trial to *throw out an election* in the third largest county in the U.S.
Breaking: Hervis Rogers, who stayed in line for 6 hrs to vote last year, is being prosecuted by AG Ken Paxton's office for allegedly voting illegally, his attorney confirms.
Rogers was a registered voter. He was on parole & he told me he believed he was eligible. Story to come.

Houston city council member Michael Kubosh explains why he's at a restaurant open for dine-in service in violation of Harris County's stay-at-home order:

volunteers were knocking on doors in sunnyside, where 75% of residents are black. the resident who reported it told me her neighbors are elderly and they're frequent voters. she said she's relieved she answered the door instead of her grandmother, who might have signed the form.
A Houston renter who lost her job in the pandemic gave her landlord a CDC form to stop her eviction. But they still filed to evict her.
She says Judge Jeff Williams asked her: can't you just live with your parents?
She said no. She was evicted anyway.
good morning from harris county commissioners court, there are constable officers *everywhere* lining the hallways and court room. this is likely a demonstration of force about their budget.
Protesters are gathering at the federal courthouse in downtown Houston, where a hearing is set for this morning in the lawsuit challenging 127,000 drive-thru ballots cast during early voting.

“we are investigating this issue and exploring legal options to protect residents and prevent this from happening again,” the harris county attorney’s office said in a statement, adding it is working with the harris county elections office to fully understand what happened.
in the end, i think it's *andy's performance of rafe's funeral* that does the trick. rafe is like: GET THE NURSE. he gets vaccinated. mary checks her list and notices barney isn't vaccinated yet either (of course) so he gets the shot too.
galveston county resident hannah melcer testifying on the county's proposed redistricting maps: “i’m neither democrat nor republican. what i do know, as a woman born in the south and raised in the south, is that this map - both of them - are racist. and you know it."
if you're a national news outlet that hasn't been covering the election-related bills at the texas legislature targeting houston, now would be the time to do so
“i urge voters to be vigilant. voters in sunnyside, and throughout the region, have rights. voters need to know they are under no obligation to engage this group, provide information, or sign any document,” county commissioner rodney ellis said in a statement
I just got to the polling place at Texas Southern University. There are at least 100 people still waiting to vote. It's 11:15pm.

texas election network was formed in 2021 by melissa conway, the RNC's state director for election integrity in TX. an RNC spokesperson said conway has been an inactive, unpaid member of texas election network since starting at the RNC.
can't stress this enough: texans have only 10 days left to register to vote in 2022 primary elections (deadline 1/31) & it's not easy to do, so do it now. a majority of americans believe U.S. democracy is *at risk of failing* right now. voting is essential. links in this thread>>
texans have 17 days to register to vote in march primary elections (deadline 1/31) so if you're not registered yet
-mail your application
-renew drivers license online & register to vote
-or move to 1 of 20 states with same-day registration or 42 states with online registration
banned books are disappearing from some houston-area schools. but you can find them (for free!) at harris county public libraries, which officially became "book sanctuaries" today:
a harris county GOP spokesperson said texas election network is not affiliated with the local party, but confirmed alan vera — chair of the county GOP's ballot security committee, an unpaid position — is a texas election network board member
andy and rafe have some coffee in the jail cell and this is where the andy magic happens. andy's like: "i totally get why you don't want to get vaxxed - it's so you can be a famous hero and example to others to get vaccinated. when you're dead." and rafe's like: "who, me? dead??"
today's election day in TX. 4 years ago, hervis rogers was called a hero when he waited in line 6 hours to vote.
but TX prosecuted him for casting that ballot. and while he still urges others to do their civic duty, he's decided he'll never vote again:
the irony that there are commenters who think it's impossible for people to lose their child this way, when the reason why this couple's friend decided to call CPS in the first place is bc she thought they were lying about getting evicted bc there's an eviction moratorium
"in the event that the harris county elections office ever needs to contact you directly our staff will have county ID badges to prove their identity, and/or paperwork with the logo or official seal of the office included," the harris county elections office said in a statement
new: the TX legislature in the coming days could vote to abolish the harris county elections administrator position. this would be an unprecedented step to remove a local official by targeting just one county without its consent >>
i am not going to quote all the lyrics about getting buried with sod under the willer tree but andy goes pretty hard with rafe's funeral song and needless to say rafe looks truly rattled now
and andy's like: "yup you're going to be dead and all your family and friends will be telling stories about how you died and then they'll get vaccinated right away." and then
in doorbell camera video footage recorded sunday, a man carrying a clipboard explains to the resident: "what they told us to do is get a yes or no to confirm whether everybody is here. if not, we'll take the ones off that are not, and then they update their records."
then andy tells rafe all about what rafe's funeral is going to be like when he dies of tetanus because he wouldn't get vaccinated. and andy says: "if i'm not too sad to sing......here's the song i'm going to sing at your funeral" and he starts playing the song
rafe looks distraught and stops andy from finishing the song. andy acts confused like: "i thought you wanted to be dead and heroically inspire everyone else to get vaccinated?" rafe says he does not want that.
the thing is, everything's suspicious when you don't know how it works
in this case, the reality is the county is required under state law to post public notices in the newspaper
"these volunteers are not employees of any political party. the nonprofit’s mission is to empower citizens to ensure and protect fair and transparent elections," vera said in a statement
barney says andy was too soft on rafe, so he and the nurse go to see rafe and barney yells at rafe to get the shot. rafe shoots at them until they leave.
I see you guys asking for a pic but I didn't get one because this judge strictly enforces no photos/recording. Last time I was there he got really upset that I tried to take a photo because he doesn't wear a face mask.
at first andy was like "well we have come to visit you, check out this... cool thermometer and stethoscope and....this shot..." but rafe chased them away
Party officials in several counties have adopted resolutions against the grocery store magnate for a litany of alleged offenses against the state Republican platform.
harris county judge lina hidalgo delivering victory speech now, thanking GOP opponent alexandra mealer for hard fought campaign & service to the country
calls out 1) DA kim ogg who "said with a straight face that we defunded the police" & 2) a "baffling" newspaper endorsement
the county nurse (her name is mary) implores rafe to get the vaccine for his children's safety, if not his own. you can see from andy's face he knows this argument isn't going to work and it doesn't.
