This is an important thread. But worth understanding too: that probably every political party in SA, and large numbers of influential political actors, are both the beneficiaries, and targets, of disinformation campaigns. They’re not all at the instance of foreign states…

A study I did with @issafrica during the 2024 South African General elections identified a network of local influencers targeting the DA, with almost 80k posts on X. This takes on a much more sinister meaning considering the recent leak to @thecontinent_ on Russian IO in Africa.

A local influencer confirmed they were approached and paid by Russian individuals during interviews with other members of the research team, although they stopped short of saying which hashtags or campaigns they were involved in.
