I will have a piece on this subject for @Renew_Democracy next week. Those interested in a general history of the prize might consult a book of mine, "Peace, They Say."

In this book, Jay Nordlinger gives a history of what the subtitle calls the most famous and controversial prize in the world.” The Nobel Peace Prize, like the other Nobel prizes, began in 1901. So...

The Nobel prizes began in 1901. The peace prize always went for international efforts -- until the 1960 prize, which went to a freedom struggle in one country: South Africa. The laureate was Albert John Luthuli, a great man. The 2025 prize is in that spirit.

Sometimes a Nobel prize aids a freedom struggle, sometimes it does not. Let us hope that the prize to María Corina Machado, a brave woman, aids the freedom struggle in Venezuela.

"If 'mainstream' politicians don't address public problems forthrightly, the public will turn to rough men and 'mainstream' them." This and other observations from me, in a smorgasbord of a column. Take your pick.

The heroism in Ukraine is awe-inspiring, for those who care to see it and acknowledge it.
In May 2022, Sasha lost her leg in a russian attack near Odesa, but she never gave up on her dream to return to gymnastics. 6 months later, she mastered her prosthetic leg, and now competes again. This weekend, Sasha won both gold and bronze at the Black Sea Cup💙💛

A message from a Kindergarten teacher: After forty years in the classroom, my career ended with one small sentence from a six-year-old: “My dad says people like you don’t matter anymore.” No sneer. No malice. Just quiet honesty — the kind that cuts deeper because it’s

Brooke Rollins: "We had an amazing cabinet meeting. President Trump walked in before the cameras were there. The cabinet is seated around the table, and we all stood up, just his team, and gave him a two minute standing ovation. I don't think anybody has talked about that.

It was a pleasure to sit with Niall Paterson -- as smooth a pro as you'll ever see.
This one is a CRACKER. Many thanks to @jaynordlinger for his many, many insights and anecdotes - I promise you’ll come away from this one with a smile and a bucketload of info, especially as regards Trump’s chances

The Garry-Vishy show is a great distraction from the cares of the world -- even for a chess ignoramus like me. And the commentary from @ChessbaseIndia has been a kick. Thank you, all.
🙏 Thanks to everyone for the kind wishes. To be fair, I only have a couple kids at home to distract me, while Vishy has an entire nation of chess "children" to demand his attention! 🇮🇳

"The largest country on earth," Russia, "doesn't need more land. It should take better care of what is already within its internationally recognized borders." True words, from Polish foreign minister Radek Sikorski (@sikorskiradek).

The leadership of Russia must understand that its attempt to rebuild Europe’s last empire is doomed to fail.

In the 1980s, there was a famous line, concerning nuclear war: "thinking the unthinkable." I thought of this, when reading @GeorgeWill's column.

This isn’t a Russian “gray zone” war with Europe. It’s a real war. And the West is dithering.

Surely, the committee made its choice weeks ago. Surely, that choice was not Donald Trump. But could the committee switch its choice overnight? Yes. Don't bet on it. But, yes.

I have been fielding a number of inquiries about the Nobel Peace Prize. (A pleasure to do. I wrote a history of the prize.) Could Trump win it, for a Gaza deal? Well, the 2025 laureate will be announced tomorrow. I imagine discussions in Oslo are interesting just now.

I love this commentary.
Garry @Kasparov63 scores the first win of the match - in an intense Rook endgame with very little time for both players, he outplays Vishy Anand! Going into the 2nd Blitz game and the last game for today, Kasparov leads 2-1 in the Clutch Chess: Legends match.
