#reproductivecoercion often stems from harmful social and gender #norms that prioritize #patriarchial decision making about women’s bodies and ability to reproduce used to control women and/or myths, misconceptions and stigmatization about family planning use.

Both #reproductivecoercion and #intimatepartnerviolence are associated with poor outcomes around health and well-being and are common experiences among women ranging from 3-37% depending on the context.

#reproductivecoercion is also closely associated with #intimatepartnerviolence our studies show often around half of women experiencing coercion are also experiencing partner violence.

#covertcontraceptiveuse is a woman’s active resistance to #reproductivecoercion and involves using a contraceptive method without the knowledge of their male partner to avoid becoming pregnant against their will.

This is closely connected to #abortioncoercion where women are either (1) prevented from seeking access to safe abortion or (2) forced to have an abortion against their will.

Another form includes #pregnancycoercion where woman are forced or pressured to become pregnant against their wishes and often includes #violence or #threats to force a woman to comply.

Documented forms of #reproductivecoercion include #contraceptivesabotage where an individual tires to actively interfere with a woman’s use of #contraceptives including hiding, tampering with, taking away, and in extreme cases removing a contraceptive method against her will.

#reproductivecoerion is a form of #genderbasedviolence which is usually inflicted by men (or families) against women and seeks to control womens #pregnancy and #familyplanning decisions and #contraceptive use.

Inspired by my realization on the misunderstanding and polarizing views around #reproductivecoercion on twitter here is a #thread on the definitions and impact of reproductive coercion from a #violence and #gender researcher.
