My son reports that along with a ketogenic diet, a helpful intervention for

is waking up at the same time every day (7:30am) and getting outside immediately for 30 minutes of sunlight. Anybody else doing something like this?
@janellison
Yes, I recommend that to all my patients. Managing the circadian clock in this way is key to keeping your mood stable. Circadian clock genes are the core biological mechanism of mood.
@janellison
He’s not drinking alcohol or using cannabis is he? Both of those will cause the underlying chemical imbalance that causes mental health issues. Wishing him well!
@janellison
Genetic studies show that many of the genes related to bipolar disorder are in circadian rhythm pathways. Sun in the morning and consistency is important.

Will all these variants appear on either Nutrition Genome or 23andme? We've done both. Interestingly, Matt's clock seemed to regularize on a ketogenic diet. We are going to run at study with fMRI to get at mechanism.
@janellison
Add kefir, homemade from raw milk. The tryptophan converts to melatonin & helps to regulate circadian rhythm. Broaden the biome. Gut dysbiosis is the root cause of the mental health cascade.

I’m hoping your research will find similar aspects in young adult Anxiety and Depression. I’m concerned my kid won’t be open to ideas in advancement bcuz you’re addressing bipolar singularly. Not his diagnosis & we are all discovering spectrums in all types of mental differences
@PZink21
We have a study underway for major depression on a college campus (The Ohio State University.) There is a lot of anxiety in that population. They are going to begin recruiting soon.

Jan, sleep is key for us bipolars. When I left hospital I do have a sleep schedule of 10 pm to 6 am every day, monitoring my sleep with an oura ring. I recommend Mat W. book: Why do we sleep :-)
