Links golf. The word "links" comes via the Scots language from the Old English word hlinc: meaning "rising ground, ridge" and refers to an area of coastal sand dunes. Example, Royal Portrush.

The range this week. It's actually the 4th and 5th holes of the Valley course at Portrush. Gives pros a chance to hit drives to actual fairways with bunkers, slopes, rough etc. Interestingly plays down the prevailing wind.

Even Rory's coach, Michael Bannon, was impressed. “I was driving home from work and the golf club phoned me but I thought it was a joke. I honestly did not think anyone could shoot a 61 around Royal Portrush”

That week, @TheOpen was going on at St Andrews. When Darren Clarke finished his practice round, media circled him and asked him about Rory's round. “We said, ‘Did you hear what Rory did in the North?’” recalled Irish journ Brian Keogh. “He was taken aback and we were all amazed

He had just played his final 10 holes at Royal Portush in 9 under par. He carded nine birdies and an eagle, and beat the course record by three!. Rory would tell the media it was his first ever bogey-free round.

The 18th played in the opposite direction, back to the house and a gallery of fans and members waiting by the green. Yet another perfect drive left an 8-iron to the green. He hit it to 20 feet. "I just wanted to two-putt it" he said later. "I didn't care what the score was, I
