3/ We propose the Social Media Self-Presentation Matrix, with axes of Automatic vs. Controlled processes and Self-Enhancing vs. Self-Expressive goals. BeReal targets Automatic, Self-Expressive sharing, but teens found their approach falls short of their developmental needs.

2/ BeReal's designs like random notifications and reciprocal posting promote unstaged photo-sharing. However, its narrow approach to authenticity limits self-expression, creates new forms of toxicity, and doesn't adequately support teens' relationship-building needs.
