meiko kawakami uses such beautiful prose to highlight issues of bodily autonomy, class and gender… her work is so important to me

for those asking for my preferences, i truly don’t mind reading both fiction and non-fiction! altho i do like fantasy (magic realism, science fiction), introspective, and philosophical works more ^^ but i’d also love to read romance, poetry, and classics!

@reetiy_ i don’t mean books mainly about oppression! i wish to read novels by authors from countries that have been oppressed because their works were most likely suppressed back then and up until now. i just wish to widen my perspectives and learn more about their history and culture :)

finished: white nights by fyodor dostoyevsky ★★★ — girl tells man not to fall in love with her. man does it anyway and somehow blames her after pressuring and taking advantage of her during her lowest moment. oh and he’s 26 and she isn’t even of legal age (17).

ppl think i’m pointing out the age gap because it’s “problematic”. well, yes, because the gap was literally used to highlight the difference between the narrator and nastenka. she even tells him he knows better throughout the book. it’s quite literally a theme in the book 😭

the dostoyevsky dick riders have found this post. just note that he was quite literally known for his criticisms and if you’re too butthurt about what i said because i’m not praising him then you probably shouldn’t be reading his books in the first place 🤷 to each their own

finished: hell bent by leigh bardugo ★★★★ — the sequel to ninth house, focusing more on alex stern and the lengths she’s willing to go to protect everyone, including herself. answers loose ends from the first book and leaves you with more questions and a thirst for the occult

finished: ninth house by leigh bardugo ★★★★ — a sexy & mysterious read that blends everything you’d expect from a dark academia: secret societies, rituals, allure, trauma, and a whole lot of murder. bardugo blurs the line between real and fantasy in this occult horror novel.

he admits to his deception and manipulation, but that’s all he does. in fact, it feels like his acknowledgement was supposed to excuse the fact that he did all those things, then is left heartbroken as a result of his own poor decisions. it’s hard to pity a man like him.

the irony of it is that after this man professes his love to a girl clearly experiencing emotional turmoil and is too unfit & unstable to make her own decisions, he somehow gaslights her into thinking it was her fault that he fell for her, all while trying to make her accept him.

thank you to the people who spoke to me about the suppression of ukrainians, especially that of ukrainian authors, just wanted to plug this for those who wish to learn more about it and also read something from a ukrainian author who tragically passed from a missile strike

to those who wish to learn more about ukrainian authors, those who were suppressed by the russian government, i’d recommend looking into the “executed renaissance”. there are authors who have been killed recently as well, such as victoria amelina in 2023. https://t.co/phY9nYCbyQ
